They try to secure rooms for ones who attend at a discount rate. When rooms are blocked for the JW rate this ensures most will be able to obtain a room. Personally I think this is ridiculous there are some hotels not on the "list" that are nice and MUCH closer to the convention. While some hotels are discounted I have looked at some of their regular rates and I am maybe saving $5 per night on some.
I think it's another form of control. I never saved that much on a room.
When I was still in, our elders made no secret of the fact that the WTS received a gratuity from the hotels, especially if all of the blocked rooms were filled. They always saw it as an easy way to make a contribution to Mother.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a business arangement.

You can do better ($$$-wise) with Priceline.
I didn't know that StAnn, amazing. I've checked into the discount that the witnesses receive and it isn't much, $5-15 on average for a 3 star hotel when I can find about the same price for a 4 star. It's all about the control.
The society would raise a big stink over JWs staying at 'unapproved hotels' because apparently that made things harder the NEXT year with the 'approved' hotels as people would stay wherever they wanted and PAY the full rate - giving the hotels the upper hand.
I'm sorry but nobody is going to tell me where I lay my head at night - shoot!!!
They get comp rooms or free rooms when all the rooms are filled from the hotels. I know for a fact that they make money off some of the free rooms. The other free rooms they use for Bethel speakers and such.
Thanks for the info.
