I picked up a $2 book of 1950's short stories. Was reading one by Poul Anderson written in 1957 called "Call Me Joe" and realised I was reading the script for Avatar!
I googled and see that many think Cameron has ripped off this short story for his film. For example:

Anyone else here read the novella and also noticed the similarities?

The film was so bland/unoriginal it could have been a rip off of many things...

So does Pocahontas + Call Me Joe + Dragonriders of Pern = Avatar? Is there any major theme not covered by these three stories? I guess maybe Hometree and the Tree of Souls, although there are plenty of parallels for those as well, such as the tree-dwelling kodama and the killing of the forest in Princess Mononoke.
