Grandparent's Day Origins

I post this topic for as far as I (and some of the people that I know) know, this holiday is new. I looked at Wikipedia and apparently it originated in 1978 but I could not find any information regarding whether or not this holiday had any pagan origins.

We all know the Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate any holidays and naturally when I asked my wife about this 'new' holiday she was a bit provoked. She went on with the usual spiel of "why do we need a special day to celebrate our grandparents?" and all. But I had to keep her on topic with the following (and I had to say it over and over as she kept going on a tangent).

    • Grandparents Day is new, therefore there isn't any pagan origins attached (at least not that I am aware of).
    • Are Jehovah's Witnesses allowed to celebrate it?
    • If not, why not?

One of her responses went along the lines of, "Well, it may be new but I doubt we will be allowed to just celebrate it because it is new." My response, "I'm so sorry," with pity in my voice. Truth is, it really is a shame that witnesses must get their answers from their religious leaders first before deciding on whether or not something like this is okay.

It is a shame Witnesses are taught what to think not how to think ... They are afraid to make a personal decision w/o checking with the Society first . I know all to well ,my Mom did that constantly .

I think it is an ok holiday to celebrate. I don't think it is even considered a holiday, rather a "hallmark" holiday or whatever. Kind of like sweetest day?

"Hey you wanna go see a movie?

"Just a minute I have to ask the brothers"

"Hey turn on that TV show"

"Just a minute I have to be sure it's ok with the brothers"

"Dude lemme show you this video game, it's awesome"

"What is that? Pac-Man? I dunno, there's ghosts in it. Lemme ask the brothers."

"Are you okay? You look a little tense."

"I just had a big beefy bean burrito and I left a message on the brothers answering machine to see if it was ok to take a dump but he hasn't got back to me yet"

"I'm sure it's okay, just wash your hands after you're done."

"Wash my hands...............Hey hand me that phone over there."

If it appears on the calendar, it's pagan, no matter what.

If it's to be celebrated and there is a special day for it, it's pagan, period.

It appears that my wife considers anything that has the word 'holiday' attached to it as unclean.

All it really is is a way to get people to spend money on this day for their grandparents. They wouldn't have any problem doing so on any other day of course but make it a national recognized day and all of a sudden it morphs into the seven headed beast or the drunken harlot or some other damned thing.
