    Here is an interesting article I came across. Although it does not mention JW's, it does mention some interesting correlations.

    The link is http://www.sutphenpublishing.com/articles/battle.htm .

    Here is the Table of Contents:

    * The Birth of Conversion / Brainwashing in Christian Revivalism in 1735
    * The Pavlovian explanation of the three brain phases
    * Born-Again preachers: Step-by-step how they conduct a revival and the expected physiological results
    * The "voice roll" technique used by preachers, lawyers and hypnotists
    * New trance-inducing churches
    * The six steps to conversion
    * The decognition process
    * Thought-stopping techniques
    * The "sell it by zealot" technique
    * True believers and mass movements
    * Persuasion techniques: "Yes set," "Imbedded Commands," "Shock and Confusion" and the "Interspersal Techniques," Subliminals
    * Vibrato and ELF waves
    * Inducing trance with vibrational sound
    * Even professional observers will be "possessed" at charismatic gatherings
    * The "only hope" technique to attend and not be converted
    * Non-detectable Neurophone programming through the skin
    * The medium for mass take-over

    I haven't read the article yet, but this couple seems to be "out there" in their own way. Did you explore the site. They're into past life regression and other "new age" "metaphysical" stuff. This doesn't mean the article isn't good, just that the source is questionable on some accounts.

    Great stuff, Freepeace!

    For years I've been looking for a supposed book by Sutphen, also by the title of "The Battle For Your Mind". Was there ever a book by this title? Or was it always a pamphlet?

    CPiolo,

    I know Sutphen's site may take a little getting used to, especially in light of our previous JW mindsets. But I'm open to New Age concepts and ideas.

    I don't necessarily believe in reincarnation, but who the hell really knows? So far, I don't have strong feelings against these concepts. I guess I'm willing to at least investigate these ideas until such time as I find a reason to not believe it. At least that's my take on it.

    AlanF,

    I just found this article this morning, and as far as I know, it is not a book. It appears to be an expanded version of a talk he gave in the mid-80's. There are a number of websites that it is found on, each with a slightly different version.

    I read the first 2 chapters in his book, "Reinventing Yourself," (found on the website) and think I'll buy the book.

    Anyway, glad you liked it.

    Doug

    Doug!

    How long ya had the beard? Check out that mug! I like it.

    Sutphen is a bit "New Age" huh? Cool. Sounds like I'd like his stuff.

    When are we going to get around to doing some philosophizing

    Sutphen does have an extensive background in advertising and this does lend him credibility regarding persuasion techniques. After all, what is advertising but an effort to manipulate you in some way? Good advertisers and marketers use many of the same techniques to get you to "buy" their product, whatever it may be from the tangible (products) to the intagible (ideologies).

    Hey Circe!!!

    Great to hear from you!

    I've had the beard about 6 months now. I had never had a beard before, so I "tried one on" and still have it. Tracy won't let me shave it off. Kind of funny, because she said she really didn't like beards before. I like it too. I had one gal in a restaurant ask me if I was a psychologist! So I guess I look the part anyway.

    I'm game for some philosophizing if you are. Got any good topics? How about the one you raised a couple of years ago on H20 (if you still have it)? I think I have it somewhere, I'll take a look.

    Talk to you soon and tell Felix hello!

    CPiolo,

    What you said seems to be right on. Sutphen apparently has quite a background in persuasion techniques. But I noticed in his article above, that he is insistent on telling people before hand what he is doing, and then getting their agreement.

    Take care.

    Doug,

    I don't think I saved the post that you are referring to. Even if I did, however, I don't have access to it because it's on our old computer (on which the hard drive is "fried").

    Which particular post are you referring to?

    Hey, I've been rethinking the idea of reincarnation lately. There's a good topic.

    Felix has a beard. I'll have to tell him about yours.

    I read the article and found it informative. Much of the material I've come accross in other sources (Hassan, Hoffer), but it is a good introductory piece. Sutphen, apart from advertising, is also a htpnotist and conducts motivational workshops. This further qualifies him as knowledgeable regarding persuasion techniques. The past life regression, palmistry, astrology and other new age stuff made me leary.

    I am currently reading an interesting book called Coercion: Why We Listen to What 'They' Say: . http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/157322829X/qid=1011826614/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_75_1/104-4078506-1746330. I am not far into the book, but it explores in further detail the techniques outlined by Sutphen.

    Thanks for the link.

    CPiolo,

    I know what you mean, I had the same knee-jerk reaction. But I chocked it up to my JW programming, and quickly discarded it. If I decide that I don't believe in reincarnation and other occult things, I want it to be my decision, not the WTS's.

    I will check out the link. Thanks, sounds interesting.
