noticed this in the Shepherd the Flock book in chapter five.

It's a list of things that would merit a Judicial committee.

This was one of the things on the list:

    19. Gluttony: (Prov. 23:20, 21; w04 11/1 pp. 30- 31) Aglutton routinely shows a lack of restraint, even gorging himself on food to the point of feeling very uncomfortabl e or becoming sick. Gluttony is determined, not by someone's size , but by bis attitude toward food.

It seems to me that someones size would be a good determining factor on their attitude toward food. Unless of course they are just fat because they have a "glandular problem" or they are just "big boned" LOL these are the usual excuses.

If the elders are not to determine gluttony from size then how do they determine ones attitude toward food?

Hmmmmm... so you believe that gluttony only applies to fat people, dear ldrnomo (peace to you!)? Interesting. The definition doesn't really say that, does it?

"Gluttony, derived from the Latin gluttire meaning to gulp down or swallow, means over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink or intoxicantsto the point of waste. In some Christian denominations, it is considered one of the seven deadly sins - a misplaced desire of food or its withholding from the needy. 1 Gluttony is not universally considered a sin; depending on the culture, it can be seen as either a vice or a sign of status. The relative affluence of the society can affect this view both ways. A wealthy group might take pride in the security of having enough food to eat to show it off, but it could also result in a moral backlash when confronted with the reality of those less fortunate.

1 ( From Lat. gluttire, to swallow, to gulp down), the excessive indulgence in food and drink. The moral deformity discernible in this vicelies in its defiance of the order postulated by reason, which prescribesnecessity as the measure of indulgence in eating and drinking. This deordination, according to the teaching of the Angelic Doctor , may happen in five ways which are set forth in the scholastic verse: "Prae-propere, laute, nimis, ardenter, studiose" or, according to the apt rendering of Father Joseph Rickably: too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily. Clearly one who uses food or drink in such a way as to injure his health or impair the mental equipment needed for the discharge of his duties , is guilty of the sin of gluttony. It is incontrovertible that to eat or drink for the mere pleasure of the experience, and for that exclusively, is likewise to commit the sin of gluttony."

I've known some very skinny people who are as tight fisted as they come, dear one. And mean-spirited. Wouldn't share a peanut if they thought it was going to take something away from them, even if they saw someone gasping for breath in the gutter. I've also seen overweight... indeed, obese people... working in food kitchens, even taking from their own cupboards to feed the hungry. Because of this, I've learned that gluttony is not necessarily an act... but a frame of mind... and heart.

Sometimes I don't have a great deal... and other times I do. In either event, I must praise JAH... because I dang sure want to enjoy myself and what I'm eating. But because of Him... and what He has granted me through His Son... I no longer "enjoy" guilt.

    Peace to you!

I did not say gluttony only applies to fat people as you may have read in my post I said that size would be a good indicator of gluttony. I also mentioned in my post that some people who are overweight may have "glandular problems" or may be "big boned".

I am sure there are thin gluttons but I'm also sure that most gluttons are overweight for the simple reason that they eat too much and they eat the wrong foods.

What happened to the principle of our body being a temple and taking care of the life and body we were given by God a major responsibility on our part?

The Shepherd the flock of God book says and I quote "A glutton routinely shows a lack of restraint" I'm assuming the society was refering to a lack of restraint when it comes to over-eating. So if I am right, and that's what it refers to then I would assume that one who over eats get's fat.

I am also assuming that because you were so quick to try and defend, over eating fat people as not being gluttons, that you may have a few more pounds on you then you should have to be considered healthy.

Are you over weight or fat AGuest?

I have an elder family member ( not overweight) but always first in line for food even ahead of elderly or children. He wants select choices in a buffet line and may go back to get more before others have had a chance to eat. May start to belch and pass gas while you are still eating because he 's been wolfing food down and is stuffed! He refers to be invited to some one's home as a "free food". He takes fist fulls of candy at a restaurant on the way in and out. He will be the one in the dining room starting on the desserts while others are still enjoying appetizers and conversation in the other room. He will not put out all the food at a party in his home even though there is clearly not enough for the guests so that he has more for later. If you are serving "free alcohol" he won't stop and will never leave. When friends bring fancy wine or beer to their home they stash it away and serve some cheap crap so they can have the good stuff all to themselves later. That a Glutton!!!! NMKA

Getting df'd for gluttony would be one of the coolest things ever.

    "So mama...I'm getting df'd..."

    "Why, my son, why?!?"

"I ate too much at the last congregation picnic. I ate to the point of being uncomfortable and feeling sick. So Jehovah judged me unworthy of life."

I have never known a person to be d/f for gluttony. My father as a CO once served a congregation where a man was denied from becoming a MS due to gluttony though.

While I realize there are those who subscribe to that teaching, dear ld (peace to you!), it really is a misunderstanding of what Paul meant. Or should be. For at least four reasons: (1) Christ is recorded to have said, "The flesh is of no use at all"; (2) Paul himself wasn't all that, physically; (3) the scriptures say that God does not look at the outward appearance (which is why my Lord called some "whitewashed graves" - all pretty on the outside but inside full of dead mens' bones).

as you may have read in my post I said that size would be a good indicator of gluttony.

I did... and I thought it interesting that you left out things like over-drinking (which FAR more people do)... failing to help those who don't have any food (whcih even MORE do)... and abusing drugs/alcohol (which MANY do)... which would be even greater indicators of gluttony. But folks don't usually mention these because, well, you can't always SEE these. I mean, true, you did give a caveat, but I don't think I need to explain further because your last comments kind of reinforce what your position is. And you're entitled to it, truly.

Are you over weight or fat AGuest?

Well, some might say not so much, but if the current charts are to be believed, yes sir/ma'am, I am. I was super-hyper ultra skinny for close to four decades and then a medication caused weight gain. I live with it. My husband loves it.

But I had problems with people who assumed everyone who was overweight was a glutton when I was in the WTBTS. That kind of thinking is rampant there. Similar to that whole, if you don't attend all meetings/go out in at least 30 hours of service/pioneer, etc. you ain't 'spiritual'... or 'worthy'... thinking. Some of the kindest folks there were overweight, however... and some of the meanest were skinny as all get out. And your comment reminded me of "them"... and that perhaps you still have little of them "on" you.

Just trying to pull your coat, dear ld. 'Cause you never know when your body might begin to play tricks on you. But didn't mean anything by it, truly. I am a bit tired... and, I must admit... discouraged... even disgusted... and so probably shouldn't have responded at all. But it happens... and I have and so...

    Anyway, peace to you.
