Hmmmmm... so you believe that gluttony only applies to fat people, dear ldrnomo (peace to you!)? Interesting. The definition doesn't really say that, does it?
"Gluttony, derived from the Latin gluttire meaning to gulp down or swallow, means over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink or intoxicantsto the point of waste. In some Christian denominations, it is considered one of the seven deadly sins - a misplaced desire of food or its withholding from the needy. 1 Gluttony is not universally considered a sin; depending on the culture, it can be seen as either a vice or a sign of status. The relative affluence of the society can affect this view both ways. A wealthy group might take pride in the security of having enough food to eat to show it off, but it could also result in a moral backlash when confronted with the reality of those less fortunate.
1 ( From Lat. gluttire, to swallow, to gulp down), the excessive indulgence in food and drink. The moral deformity discernible in this vicelies in its defiance of the order postulated by reason, which prescribesnecessity as the measure of indulgence in eating and drinking. This deordination, according to the teaching of the Angelic Doctor , may happen in five ways which are set forth in the scholastic verse: "Prae-propere, laute, nimis, ardenter, studiose" or, according to the apt rendering of Father Joseph Rickably: too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily. Clearly one who uses food or drink in such a way as to injure his health or impair the mental equipment needed for the discharge of his duties , is guilty of the sin of gluttony. It is incontrovertible that to eat or drink for the mere pleasure of the experience, and for that exclusively, is likewise to commit the sin of gluttony."
I've known some very skinny people who are as tight fisted as they come, dear one. And mean-spirited. Wouldn't share a peanut if they thought it was going to take something away from them, even if they saw someone gasping for breath in the gutter. I've also seen overweight... indeed, obese people... working in food kitchens, even taking from their own cupboards to feed the hungry. Because of this, I've learned that gluttony is not necessarily an act... but a frame of mind... and heart.
Sometimes I don't have a great deal... and other times I do. In either event, I must praise JAH... because I dang sure want to enjoy myself and what I'm eating. But because of Him... and what He has granted me through His Son... I no longer "enjoy" guilt.
Peace to you!
