Brain Washing of John Walker

This morning on the way to work I was listening to the John Walker story and they quoted an immanent expert on “brain washing”, according to her this will most likely be his defense. What his team of lawyers will attempt to prove is that he was a highly impressionable teenager who was misled and brainwashed. What do you think?

I am sure this is going to raise very interesting issues. I know in my own experience, I fit the same criteria as Walker, an idealistic kid who was seriously misled and brainwashed by the Tower. This led me to go on a holy jihad against all religions. Fortunately I never directly recruited any one thus killing them spiritually and putting them at risk of committing suicide should they ever need blood.

Brainwashed or not how do you think he got into that situation? I always seem to be the one who has this crazy idea that what someone does is their own fault. I was an ass while a JW because I followed their beliefs. Who should someone get angry at because of what I did, the people telling me what to do or me for actually doing it? Me. I was the ass so I should get the blame. Anyone else who doesn't say the same just doesn't want to admit that they could actually be wrong. Who made the decisions to do that wrong thing they were told?

Was John Walker indoctrinated? Yes.

Was he "brainwashed"? Absolutely not, and neither were we.

I'm surprised that the "expert" on brainwashing neglected to mention that this process speifically required that the conversion techniques should be apllied AGAINST YOUR WILL, as they were to American prisoners of war in Korea when the term came into popular use.

Victor: John Walker was likely under mind control. But, US Passports do say that if you join a foreign military, you automatically forfiet your citizenship. Mr. Walker needs to be treated as any non-citizen, and held as a POW under the Geneva Convention rules. Unless soldiers are found guilty of war crimes, they are supposed to be repatrioted after a conflict ends. So if Walker has not committed war crimes, then send him back to Afghanistan.

He may still be in his heart a supporter of the Taliban's radicaly version of Islam. He may just see this process as persecution, much like a loyal JW would. And only after he sits in prison for a number of years will the reality of his errors hit home. I think the current media coverage and US Justice Dept involvement in this is more about political concerns than any real concerns about Walker.

If Walker can use the brainwashing defense, then I propose that any gang member who kills someone should be able to use it also. Furthermore, the gang member has a better case...he/she grew up in that life, Walker chose his. The gang member's own brother might of told him/her how right or cool it was, Walker chose to hang out with the people who told him. Simply ridiculous.

In my opinion, the media is feeling too sorry for this Son of a Bee-itch. As for treating him like a POW, uhm...no, we have never declared war. This is a "policing action". He should be tried as a terrorist in a military tribunal. Which he is, a terrorist. He joined a terrorist group, not a foreign military. A foreign military must be recognized by the UN and follow the Geneva Convention. Also, the Taliban is not fully recognized in their own country, the Northern Alliance had control of at least 10 percent. Terrorist, terrorist, terrorist.
