The British Holocaust Memorial Day is today, and although the National Event is tonight (most likely started), there are local events that have been taking place and will continue through February. I noticed the JW’s have a couple of events registered on the local events page—not sure if they will be present at the national event. I don’t see any thing wrong with this, but the witnesses steer clear of all other national or personal observances.
No birthdays, mother’s day, father’s day celebrations. No Thanksgiving Day. No Memorial or Veterans day observance--yet the practicing of their faith was restored due to the efforts of the WWII soldiers.
Various reasons are given for not observing certain occasions, but the ones I heard the most were giving undo attention to someone or the Bible says to only remember Jesus’ death and resurrection.
So why recognize this observance—and participate?
Going by the URL, the web site
- http://www.holocaustmemorialday.gov.uk/ looks like a government site, so it appears that this is a national observance. Of course, I’m in the US, so I might be missing something here. Or Has their avoidance of national observances changed within the last couple of years?
