Why do JWs think it's wrong to celebrate, say, birthdays?
Is it just because some group they define as evil (pagans?) did so?
Why does that matter? Presumably other 'evil' groups have made rice, shaved facial hair, planted flowers, invented games and worn hats. Are these thing also wrong?
Am I missing something?

"Am I missing something?"
The JWs leaders claim they're the spokesmen of a literal 144,000 most righteous
Christians, and that they've determined a distinctive set of 12 or so rules
supported by the best evidence and reasoning, and a member of JWs can't persist
in disagreeing with them. It's easy detective work once you keep the focus on that claim of the leaders.
What's missing is the reasoning and evidence. Whether or not you want to have
faith in a possible God beyond the known facts, don't mess with the facts. And
like Popoff with his radio reciever, they mess with the facts to seem exclusive
to make money. Keep the focus on showing the radio reciever for an objective
expose (and you'll need a newspaper staff to help collate the evidence). At the next link, click Edit > Find > Satanic birthday cupcakes

What are these 12 rules and what bearing do they have on banned celebrations?
