Scientists say Methuselah's age should be attainable by research
in not too distant future - because of findings from Icelandic
    gene pool.

well my take on this subject is this: People will still die...it will be only be the wealthy that will be able to afford this new gene treatment in the very near future.

I would think the generation of 50 years + will be the ones too old to receive the benefits.

    hi rekless,

    I do not think so.

It will not take such a long time. I think in about 10 - 15 years scientists will find the key for genetic telemerase-manipulation.

The main problem currently is neither limits of scientific skills nor too less money for research. It´s a question of patents and intellectual property rights.

Anyway. I tell you: this will be the greatest days in the human history. Religions are going to vanish.

e.g. : Craig Venter meanwhile filed more than 2000 patent applications in genetic-engineering matters to the US-pat-office.
This means that almost 75% of all researching opportunities in that particular scientific sphere are BLOCKED (!!)

Anyway. These will be the greatest days in human history. Religions are on the way to get destroyed.

And WTS get forced to change their policy. They cannot say then in door-to-door-preaching then: Wait until a miracle coming from Jehova. You should not set your hope in human scientific efforts; they come from the devil, not from God...

I also think that possessing the right gene is all well and good, but if you abuse your body, it won't make that much difference. I give you this example: Take Japanese women who immigrate to the US. Within their life time, their chances of getting breast cancer increases over the rate of the women left living in Japan. And their American born and raised daughters end up having the same risk of getting breast cancer as the rest of the American women. One woman in eight. This more or less demonstrates that exposure to western diet and lifestyle over rides genetic predisposition. Women who live in Japan on a traditional Japanesse diet have a very low risk of getting breast cancer - even in the industrial cities and places like Hiroshema. I have also read that western women who move to low breast cancer counties have a lower rate of breast cancer than if they had stayed the high breast cancer countries.

I do have a question though? What brings about a good gene in the first place. As in way back? Eating and living right for the body or did God hand them out?

Cancer is just part of the antiaging picture. Some of the
therapies proposed to stop aging also fight cancer. This antiaging
fight isn't about being 100 years old and decrepit. They intend
to restore health and strength - the whole nine yards!

Yeah, I doubt that will create an over population problem.

No, such a problem will not be arising.

I think, within 100 years after having found the key to get everlasting life (and youth, in good health and full strength) human mankind will invent scientific means to conquer the outer space. One can do manned space flights with speed near the velocity of light. Further, in about 500 years, mankind will find the key to do time-travels.

You can absolutely be sure there will be no boring life if mankind once is immortal.
