Here's an interesting article about Rutherford versus Russell's WT board of directors, relative to their being "chosen" in 1917-1918. Clear misrepresentation by the Watchtower Society.
Its not quiet clear to me or I might have missed it but was Rutherford appointed by Russell to be his successor?

Quite the opposite, though most JDubs won't admit it. Russell's intention was for his organization to be controlled by a board of trustees, not become the play toy of one man.

Thanks for the referral. I find that the history of this whole era is murky and in dire need of some scholarly research -- and eventual publication -- I touched on this in a recent thread about Russell's and Rutherford's curious marital histories and was told by Alan F that seferal books are in the works to redress this lack of information.
Of course and as is typical, the Society's santized histories of the organization are the last place one can expect to find the unvarnished truth about all of this. Stange people: by their relentless pounding on the doors of the public and issuing challenges for all to reappraise their relgious beliefs, they invite scrutiny and then ``circle the wagons' defensively when people make the inquiries their public ministry provokes.
I once read a very interesting book which is published by the British Bible Students about the history of the Bible Students in Britain.
It includes a chapter on the episode where Joe Ratherflawed usurped the authority of the ruling directors. It was quite a coup. He was never envisaged by Russell as being his successor. he didn't rate that highly in the ruling councils of the Bible Students Association.

Room215 and Ozzie: I think Mr. Persson is in touch with others working on this history, and may in fact be participating in their overall investigation. It's an interesting topic, and somewhat validates claims by Bible Students that Russell did not originate Jehovah's Witnesses, Rutherford did. He usurped the Watch Tower corporation and magazine, illegally it seems, and separated from the Bible Student movement.
