It is assumed that all have studied the lesson in advance and know the answers as contained in the paragraphs. There are many who hesitate to volunteer a comment, but who will speak when called upon. This method may also cause some who have become negligent in advance study of the lesson to recover from the bad habit they have drifted into. It may act as a spur to move all of us to a more thorough advance preparation for the congregational study. If so, it will make the meeting more profitable for everyone there. Hence starting with the congregational study of this issue of the magazine, the conductor may call on persons whether they volunteer or not

haha I can think of a few people who would have been fast asleep by the watchtower. I wonder if meeting attendance decreased whilst this was in force. A little heavy handed even for stalwarts.

It lasted into the 60s sometime. Or maybe it was just our WT conductor still stuck in the 50s. Who knows. I did just have a flashback after reading that though.

As a kid I was extremely shy. Hated being the focus of attention. Scared to death to be on any kind of stage.

I remember being mortified that the WT conductor would call on me out of the blue. One conductor made it a habit to call on kids to read scriptures and give simple answers even though they hadn't raised their hands. I used to sit in a way to try to be hidden by the person in front of me so he couldn't see me and call on me.

Wow... a flood of memories of that congregation and the people are coming back. Gee, thanks for ruining my day, LOL.
