overheard at the watercooler (rapture related)

So I'm walking by the breakroom and I hear voices by the watercooler. Two co-workers, one of them a JW, are talking about the failed rapture prophecy. It's not a serious discussion...they're laughing and making fun of Harold Camping and how silly his followers must've felt sometime Saturday night. The one person was making fun of them and the JW also laughed and said something about not being able to take "them" people seriously...

Um, duh... you're one of "them" people. Maybe not a Camping-ite, but another doomsday preacher, just the same. And have you ever felt silly when WT predictions failed to happen? And do you realize that no one takes you seriously? Hmmmm?

I actually stopped in my tracks, listened for a few seconds and started to go in and find a way to interject in the conversation, but I didn't. It would be pointless...and rude. Plus it would only embarrass him in front of the co-worker and he is actually a nice guy. I kinda like him. I gave him a break...

Undercover, nobody can criticise you for being kind, and treating him as you would wish to be treated.

I bet things are buzzing round in his head anyway, the whole failed end time prophecy is too close to home for JW's

Well, it's like Steve Hassan said--they can see the weird stuff in other groups, but not their own. I do remember reading Awake! articles and all when I was still in, stuff said about 'Christendom' to the public and having that one moment where I look to the side and say to myself, "Uh, awkward. Didn't we do the same thing?" Well, wish I'd figured that out sooner...

Like Wobble said, you did the right thing. You remember how awkward it was to discuss JW beliefs in a nonJW setting amongst nonJWs. I swear few things are more awkward than those settings.
