I have heard and read this before. That, to give importance to something, people would forge.
Who would know, especially back then! A scroll shows up, supposedly signed by Paul. Who is going to ask if it's really Paul's writing. I think in looking at the writing styles, is especially important.
The contra-point is that the Bible writers were fisherman and fisherman were not illiterate does not hold much weight with my untrained mind. Wouldn't fisherman in the 1st centure be dealing in person, oral, and likely in cash? Quantity would be what the fisherman caught for the day. Price would be set by market. There wouldn't be forward or requirement contracts....fish spoiled quickly without refridgeration, so a long term contract wouldn't be necessary....and the harvest would be unpredictable for both sides....so a written contract doesn't make sense to me. Sure, contracts contain damage clauses, but if you sold bad fish in the 1st BC, you'd lose your customer the next day. Damage covered. Life was simpler without so many lawyers.
Sh*t happens, and forgeries happen. And, you can never say 'for sure' that even an e-mail is from the author. Oh, dare I say it and get badgered, but some are still arguing over a 'forged' birth certificate.
This blog is signed by Skeeter. Skeeter can't be forged. Or, can Skeeter?
