Band on the Run
I was very active in antiwar demons in the States. Marched on DC and NY countless time. I had appts to lobby several Senators and congresspeople. Kent State and Jackson State seared my soul. Americans are not slaughtered for First Amendment rights. I attended the funeral of one of the Kent State students. I was willing to risk a misdemeanor arrect in DC the following weekend.
I was very ill when Tianmen Square happened. My entire body reacted in horror. I prayed to God, thanking him for being American. Outside of NY, I feared the police losing control and beating me. I recall marching past the White House, surrounded by a moat of buses. Between the buses, I saw troops with guns ready. It was painful to see the US in this light.
Compared to China, we were are all diletantes. I watched Don Rather scrambled for time before turning off his cameras, knowing a massacre would ensure. These were the elite children, many of them sons and daughters of the ruling party. What country slaughters their very children? They could have been plalcated with some discussion. Rather than negotiate for trivial measures, the Chinese decided to murder and repress. Tank Man took my breath away. It did not seem far that they were mowed down and the main stream press celebrated American students who protested.
Tank Man was summarilu executed, though, no one knows the details. The Chinese can't be the monolith we assume because thousands of students will willing to die for more freedom. It was a very emotional experience for me. Despite not being rah=rah American with blind passion, I thanked God that I was American and despite some merited cynicism, I had rights that others did not.
This was also the difference between the American colonies and the Irish. We were indulged with many rights. The Irish had nothing but brutal repression.

The video seemed similar to the revolt in Egypt.Which was just as brutal and nasty

Tank man could have been a liabiblity. He could have started blabbing or acting all guilty or provocative. Killing him was like disposing of the weapon. They could say, 'what gun?'
It takes a lot of strength protest like that, unless you're part of a group that does that. Being a lawyer is likely one of the best positions from which to affect change.
