    Respecting Patient Autonomy Means What?

Today I uploaded a new article to my blog comparing what Watchtower requires of others in terms of respecting patient autonomy with what Watchtower does itself. This article cites and provides excerpts from multiple sources.

My article is titled Respecting Patient Autonomy Means What? and is available at: http://marvinshilmer.blogspot.com/2011/06/respecting-patient-autonomy-means-what.html

I remember when the HLCs were first formed. They were sold to the rank and file JWs as being there to help us when we need them.

Now the rank and file JWs are told to "cooperate with" the HLCs as representatives of the organization. They aren't there to HELP individual JWs, they are there to MAKE SURE you let your child die or that you yourself refuse blood and if you don't, they have the paperwork handy to automatically disassociate you. Some "help" they are.

Yet another bait-and-switch game from the Borg we all know and despise.

    Hi Marvin

Here's a link to an essay I wrote for my Ethics class, way back when I was in nursing school.

    Mad Sweeney writes:

“I remember when the HLCs were first formed. They were sold to the rank and file JWs as being there to help us when we need them.”

One of the very latest Watchtower teachings is to ‘cooperate with Hospital Liaison Committees’ as a matter of yielding to divine direction.

    Watchtower writes:

"How, then, do we react when we receive divine direction? Do we try to apply it “right afterward”? Or do we continue doing things just as we have been accustomed to doing them? Are we familiar with up-to-date directions, such as those regarding conducting home Bible studies, preaching to foreign speaking people, regularly sharing in family worship, cooperating with Hospital Liaison Committees, and conducting ourselves properly at conventions? We also show our appreciation for God’s guidance by accepting counsel. When faced with far-reaching decisions, we do not trust in our own wisdom but look to Jehovah and his organization for guidance."—(The Watchtower, April 15, 2011 p. 4-5)

Combine that with the statement by Watchtower’s HLC member David Maylon and it distills down to this:

Cooperate with us so we can threaten you with ‘Either you will report your sin to the elders or I will!’[1]

    Watchtower spits on patient autonomy.

What proof is there that they are worth trusting for counsel? I see no business acumen or correct prophesies. The arrogance is mind boggling. Now I'm wondering if their grabbiness and untoward influence always manifested itself or is it more recent? I don't recall them thrusting themselves in to every decision in the past.

The family always noted a difference between local Hall directives, a joke, and Bethel, not a joke.

HLC members are helpful for Witnesses who want to live yet are compelled to follow Watchtower’s blood doctrine no matter what.

Otherwise HLC members are good for threatening Witnesses with ‘Either you will report your sin to the elders or I will!’

    Scully,

Forgive me for not commenting earlier, but I wanted to read and digest your essay before commenting.[1]

Here is my comment: Your presentation of information is well composed and draws clear and constructive mechanisms to determine an ethical approach for Witnesses working in the healthcare industry.

    Well done!
