Circuit Servant (Overseer) Just Another Elder?

Many newer jws say this never happened but I remember the problems it caused. For years congregation servants (no elders yet) feared the CO visit who wielded a great deal of power over the servants. If the CS said jump, the congregation servants said how high. Do you remember those days or heard of it? Have you heard jws say it never happened? Selective memories...........

*** w71 11/15 p. 700 A “Body of Elders” with Rotating Chairmanship ***Does a circuit servant when he visits a congregation have more authority than the elders of the congregation and can he change things in the congregation, such as times of meetings, the arrangement of the hall, or change brothers in the various positions of oversight? No! A circuit servant does not have that authority. A circuit servant is simply an elder appointed by the Society to visit congregations to build them up spiritually and take the lead in the field service. His being a circuit servant does not mean that he is better qualified than are the local elders. Often the Society uses congregation servants to be circuit servants on weekends to serve other congregations in the vicinity. These congregation servants or other servants are used because they are qualified to give spiritual advice and counsel. The circuit servant or district servant should never think himself superior to the “body of elders” in the congregation. He should consider himself as an elder sent to the congregation by the Society to give what help and assistance he can offer and to encourage the whole congregation to press on in their grand work. The “body of elders” in the congregation should look forward twice a year to the visit of the circuit servant, who is also an elder, knowing that he will bring some good spiritual counsel from the Word of God and that he himself will set a good lead in the field service.

They still do wield the power. As an elder you dreaded the CO visit, especially if he was a hard nosed bastatrd.

Yes, I remember this. The Society freaked out when some elder bodies started saying that the C.O. was 'just another elder'. They had to publish a bunch of stuff reminding the bodies of the magic connection to the mythical Faithful Slave that C.O.'s have.

The rotation arrangement was novel but got dumped when it became evident that many elders were bozos who couldn't run anything. So, they had to go back to a system similar to what they had.

Yes, this was the doctrine back when the elder arrangement was first announced - and was part of the "rotation of elders" era. It ended about the same time as the rotation custom - also about the time of the Ray Franz issues.

Nice quote blondie... Ill do you one "better"...

The jack wagon co in my cuircit will play side of the issue. One the one hand he will tell us "oh im just an elder like you" and 30 seconds later he will remind us he directly appointed by the branch and we need to respect him as such.... Oh yea, good times in dubbie land :-P

Yes, blondie, I remember it. Like MJP says, at the time many thought it was going to be a breath of fresh air. It occurred while RF was riding high, but we all know what happened shortly thereafter. TJ managed to get things largely changed back to the situation where the CO is defintiely NOT just one of the elders!

I must say that back in the 70s and early 80s I had the pleasure of knowing and working with more than one truly spiritual CO. Many were resentful of having their power diminished but some COs took the change as Jehovah's direction—a more loving, reasonable approach. But, of course, that wasn't to be. As for those who deny now that it ever happened, well, they have their psychological needs ...

    Hope this helps.

All elders are equal, it's just some are more equal than others.

Quote from Animal Farm - "All pigs are equal, it's just some are more equal than others."

Our elder body stood pretty defiant at times with certain COs. They were mostly older men who regarded many of these COs as being young and inexperienced or old and out of touch.

The circuit servant or district servant should never think himself superior to the “body of elders” .

If they said that in a WT, it must mean that there WAS a problem.
