These are just the tip of the ancient iceberg of deities. There are tens of thousands more. All [or most] have been completely rejected by all of mankind today. Likely you too, are an atheist toward all these gods.

In this regard, Richard Dawkins made a point that is hard to ignore, when he stated:

"We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

It seems likely to me, that 10,000 years from now, the Judeo-Christian and the Islamic and most other 'gods' worshiped in this epoch of time will fall into the list above, and those asked at that time will barely recognize the name of him/her/it. Likely though, with the internal needs of man being what they are, some other, future-named 'god' of some sort will be the momentary idol of choice.

In 1984 Frankie Goes to Hollwood released 'Two Tribes'. It contained the lyric (sung by a Ronald Reagan soundalike); "Are we living in a land where sex and horror are the new gods?"

    Those gods are quite real.

For "small g" gods on your list that are not considered to be Supreme Beings, I think of them as descriptions used by people in different times and places for various aspects of the Deity. In some versions of Hinduism, they actually are.

Some of those names on your list are local names for a Supreme Being themselves, so the music changes, but the song remains the same.

    Thank you unshackled for that.

Carlin is without a doubt my favorite modern-day dead atheist! Interestingly enough, once I came to the conclusion that there was no sky-daddy paying attention, I too began to think that if someone needed something to 'worship' it made plenty of sense to worship the sun. Far more sense than worshiping an invisible being who as George said 'Loves you'. LOL I have not prayed to Pesci lately though.

Hell, I'll believe in any of them that show up at my barbecue, introduce themselves, and ask for a 'cold' one...

Speaking of which - I'm thirsty...
