Renewable energy production has surpassed nuclear energy production in the U.S. according to the latest issue of Monthly Energy Review published by the Energy Information Administration. Production of alternative energy is also beginning to close in on domestic oil production.

Renewable....as in:
you have room for a windmill at your house without having to cut down trees for miles to keep a breeze going?
you will pedal a bike to turn on a light which you can't use because you have to keep peddling to keep it lit?
This is great news.
The little ones now in school will take this further as they are all environmentally informed nowadays.
I was on holiday in Austria a couple of yrs ago, and many houses in the valley had solar panels on the roof, and i saw a few domestic wind turbines. Once room temperature superconductors are widely available, each home will be able to supply its own electricity from a very small generator.
Once the oil and gas runs out we will have no choice but to go down this route.
japan HAD to go the nuclear option as it has no natural resources, and now look at Sendai.

That's cool. As more and more people become informed on renewable energy, and not as ignorant as some, then this number will continue to rise.
I am using my version of small-scale solar - with my 65-watt solar panel on my roof that charges my battery. We use it to light the home in to early morning and late evening... and sometimes in the middle of the day. It works well, and the battery recharges every day - even on cloudy days.
It ain't much, but it has cut the electric bill by about 10 to 15%.

I take the article as positive, even though they include hydroelectric power in the renewable energy group (well, it really is a renewable energy!).
Here in the southwest, we have lots of sunlight and heat -- which work great for solar and concentrated solar energy. It's starting to sprout up everywhere.

Hydro energy is hardly environmentally friendly. It kills rivers. Corn ethanol is not truly renewable. It is crap. You feed petro products in, you get ethanol out. Those two account for most of the "renewables" share in the pie.
BTS... you are correct. I am only trying to be optimisitc about the remaining Wind, Solar. Any positive move of the needle in the "up" direction for those is a good thing.

Wind and solar work, but only in conjunction with some sort of steady baseline power generation. With current technology, that means one of the non renewables.
BTS... again you are correct, but take a look at molten salt heat storage. It may prove quite usefull.
