In pursuit of my dreams

"Followed dreams reaching higher.....couldn't survive the fall"

So the lyrics of one of my favorite bands say.

So I'm about to turn 27 and thanks to the good ol WT teachings of how this evil system of things is trying to corrupt us with Satan's higher education, now I'm stuck in a 100+ degree warehouse making crap money handling and shipping heavy packages while following bizarre rules the boss has. (this is the first warehouse I've seen where music isn't allowed of any type.)

My dream as a teenager was to work in computer arts and animation. Like most kids I was obssesed with videogames, but the only thing I loved more than the games was the making of the games. I loved watching "the making of" movies and games. I thought it was just a phase, but here I am a little more than 10 years later and I still keep thinking about it. I brought up this dream to my parents when I was a teen, but my parents kept reminding me of how the entertainment industry belongs to the Devil and it wouldn't be appropiate for a christian to take any part of it. I feel the sand running out the hourglass and I'm just sitting here waiting to get old. So I looked up bachelors degrees online for animation and I fell off the top of the world when I saw the price. It's between 80K and 100K!

I don't think I can go through with it at that price. I'm married now! If I had done this when I was single despite the bull$#!t everyone around me said, I might have been in a better situation now. I just suddenly got this hopless feeling of being destined to work at crappy blue collar jobs until I'm ready for retirement at the age of 40. A retirment I won't get until my mid sixties (maybe...big maybe). I think I set my hopes too high and reality came crashing down. Well, it could be worse I guess. There are thousands of people without a job so I guess I'm lucky to have one...no matter how crappy it is.

fade-away, from my perspective you are a kid, and the world is yours for the taking!

Work out your career plan like a project - objective, costs, benefit over time, risks and mitigation, other issues. That will show you if it's worth the time and money invested.

If it looks promising, it will also help get your wife on board. Ultimately she stands to benefit as well if you are happy and earning enough.

If it doesn't stack up, consider Plan B; what other work could you enjoy that needs less education and/or pays better? I know there's a huge demand for network professionals here and you could get some training in electronics.

It's your life, take charge and let the regrets go bury themselves (but it took me long enough to work that out )

Hi, I am studying and want to become part of the media industry at some point in the future. I study FCP video editing at the moment and will be going on to study corporate video next term. At 43 years old the career change is hard work and very risky but I want to do it instead of being slave to someone elses ideals. From a £30 000 per wage to next to nothing is a hard know for me but I worked out my finances and have gone for it.

I have seen guys on you tube who sell tutorial DVDs on certain subjects, one of my favourite is FINAL CUT KING who is finacing his college tuition fee by selling his DVDS ( they are really just rehashed ideas from others in reality)...............there are 1000 posibilities out there to make money, You should do some research on how others finance their education.

I cannot understand why your education is so expensive but If you can find another way of financing your education then try and look for it...

You are in a unique situation to make a positive contribution to the world by adding your values to your passion which effects others. You can do this in a positive and creative way if you so choose.

If you are unhappy in your life and you want to make a change. You only get one life so live it . ( just have to find a way to finace it.)

I understand how you feel fade away.

I know nothing about animation but I wonder if a bachelor degree is really worth the paper its written on.

It seems to me that animation is an art form. Did Leonardo de Vinci have a BA? I think not.

On another note, start looking round for a job that pleases you. It might mean taking a risk as trailerfitter says. That ones for you to contemplate though.

    Remember the dead poets society?

Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.

@trailerfitter: Good luck (Oh how it feels good to be alowed to say that!)

Well, I'm in my mid-40s and pursuing my BS. I haven't married, so that simplifies my life. Both the government and school have greatly helped with my education financing, because I left Bethel with no money and not-so-good health. I'm going into an engineering field with 100% employment and top starting salaries for grads. Although it's very much a math and science field that I've been good in, I'm also a gifted writer and speaker. I have skills in the arts that are mostly on the back burner for now. Although I'm not a kid anymore, I still have a lot of life to live.

If you have children, that's much more complicated than just being married. But as you already know, you need to start working on something because "the end" isn't coming anytime soon, so plan on a long, full, enjoyable life.

If you live in the US, start by completing a FAFSA to see if you qualify for financial aid. Use the school of your dreams and some local state schools and/or community colleges on the application. In Ohio a year at a state university is $7200, which is a far cry from the tuition you cited. Even if you must go to a specialized school for the degree you want, almost all schools accept a certain amount of credits transferred from community colleges and/or state schools. Check things out thoroughly before giving up on your dreams.
