Great ideas for Valentine's Day
(24 Jan 2002)
The cards, which include a poem from police in Brighton and Hove will drop on to the mats of the top 10 car thieves and burglars on February 14.The greetings were a tongue-in-cheek reminder that the crooks, all aged between 16 and 30, were constantly being watched, said Superintendent Peter Coll.
"Although this is a light-hearted way of letting our targets know we are watching them, the serious message to these active criminals is that we know you are committing crime and we will lock you up," he said.
The poem in the cards reads: "Will you be my valentine? I'm hoping we can meet. We have a cosy cell prepared here at John Street. Just continue with your law-breaking and we can guarantee, a ride in a police car and a lack of liberty."
Mr Coll added: "I believe anyone who has been the victim of the type of pain and frustration that burglary and car crime causes will be behind us in our approach.
"In addition to these cards we regularly visit our targets and disrupt their criminality."
He added that in the past two years in the Brighton and Hove area, domestic burglary had gone down 38% and vehicle crime was down 22%, meaning there were 3,400 fewer victims of crime.
