Former Jehovah's elder starts abuse Web site

    By Bobbie Foust
    Tribune-Courier Editor

William Bowen of Calvert City is continuing a campaign he started last year over policies within Congregation of the Jehovah's Witness church regarding alleged
    sexual abuse of children.

Bowen, a former church elder, resigned last year. Now he has started a support group called silentlambs Inc., a network for abuse victims. Its Web site, www.silentlambs.org , allows victims to share their stories.

James Bonnell, leader of the local Jehovah's Witness congregation in Draffenville, wouldn't comment on the issue. "This issue was brought up over a year ago, and Mr. Bowen has tried to keep it in the public eye," he said.

Bowen also has traveled to Washington State to support a victim, who he says was harassed, during two criminal trials of her abuser.

On Jan. 22, the woman, Erica Rodriguez, filed a federal lawsuit in the Eastern District of
Washington, against Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Othello Spanish Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Manuel Beliz—the man convicted of abusing her as a child.

Bowen calls the lawsuit “just the tip of the iceberg.” He claims the church discourages victims from reporting abuse to authorities telling them instead to report it to church leaders.

“Our denomination is now where the Catholic Church was 20 years ago—right on the edge of a crisis," Bowen said.

Bowen recommends three things to stop abuse:

    # Victims should go to the police first.

    # The church should not put a known molester in a position of responsibility.

    # Stop child molesters from going door to door.

After resigning last year as presiding overseer of the local congregation, Bowen made accusations to "push the denomination's leaders to respond more sympathetically" to abuse victims, a release said. He claims that "on a shoestring budget" in only few months he has contacted more than 1,000 victims.

The Watchtower Society doesnt want it kept in the public eye. Hare Krishna's are even now before bankruptcy judges trying to get reorganized and dodge $400 million in lawsuits over sexual and other abuse of HK kids in India and the U.S. WTS is too stupid to change; too much to hide from the very top down.

    That's awesome.
I bet there are many victims through out the world that need help.
Plus many "brothers" who need shooting

Bear in mind what Bonnell did was make « no comment »

What he conveyed is : well that’s an old story and well what can we do, poor old Bill is trying to keep it alive

The WT knows by experience that public interest will shift rapidly if there is no conflict. This is a favorite tactic of the WT used in apostate, blood transfusion and even in Michael Jackson like situations - no comment

Sure enough, the public loses interest and the heat vanishes.

    Another spin on Bonnell's comment:

James Bonnell, leader of the local Jehovah's Witness congregation in Draffenville, wouldn't comment on the issue. "This issue was brought up over a year ago, and Mr. Bowen has tried to keep it in the public eye," he said.
    1. He *said* no comment - and then specifically *made* a comment.

    2. Bonnell - "This issue was brought up over a year ago," - which is interesting, because the WTBTS has done nothing to rectify that situation within that year......and I would assume Bonnell knows that too.

    3. Bonnell - "and Mr. Bowen has tried to keep it in the public eye." And by Bonnell's comment - this "leader" didn't say anything negative about keeping it in the public's eye.

A JW will construe negativity - but the average reader would think Bonnell is commending Mr. Bowen.....in a way that couldn't bite Leader Bonnell on the butt by JW lawyers.

Bonnell's *no comment* is actually a comment which can be taken two ways. He's either really stupid.......or quite deliberate. Interesting.

From the other current thread started by SilentLambs, it may be concluded that Bonnell is really that stupid.

However, why not weigh the virtues of playing off his words - since the average person won't understand the jw negative implication?

And if played smoothly enough, Bill might even confuse some jw's into believing that Bonnell IS actually commending him for his efforts for innocent children. Let Bonnell squirm a little for his lawers.

    It's called playing the Devil's Advocate.....or being a politician.
