Fred Franz's words - haunting JWs from beyond the grave!

As most people on this site have come to know, the "New World Translation Committee", the group claiming responsibility for the "New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures", consisted of Fred Franz and a bunch of lackeys who did busy-work. Franz was the only one hwho had even a passing knowledge of Biblical Hebrew & greek.

The 7/15/11 WT's comments about "mentally diseased" apostates is causing quite a stir in the UK in print and online. There are numerous threads on that topic on this board today.

The phrase "mentally diseased" in this context is a direct quote from 1 Timothy 6:3-4 from the NWT:

3 If any man teaches other doctrine and does not assent to healthful words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, nor to the teaching that accords with godly devotion, 4 he is puffed up [with pride], not understanding anything, but being mentally diseased over questionings and debates about words. From these things spring envy, strife, abusive speeches, wicked suspicions,

However, most other translations don't come anywhere near to using that terminology. Here are a few examples:

    NIV:

3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions

    NASB:

3 If anyone ( E ) advocates a different doctrine and does not [ d ] agree with ( F ) sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine ( G ) conforming to godliness, 4 he is ( H ) conceited and understands nothing; but he [ e ] has a morbid interest in ( I ) controversial questions and ( J ) disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,

    21st century KJV:

3 If any man teach otherwise and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes over words, from which cometh envy, strife, railings, evil suspicions,

And there are of course dozens of other translations - none of which even intimate "mental disease".

I'm quite sure that neither the Writing Committee, nor whichever GB member has oversight of them, thought anything about that comment in the Watchtower. After all, it's a direct quotation from the NWT! How can you go wrong with that?

Now of course, they are probably scrambling - undoubtedly answering dozens or hundreds of phone calls to the London branch, preparing for possible police investigation, etc.

If the story gains traction and spreads to other countries, especially the US, they'll go into full crisis mode.

    And why?

Because of the words a semi-educated translator with limited knowledge of Biblical Greek happened to choose 60+ years ago, which words just quietly lay there, not bothering anyone, until now.

Poor ol' Freddy! Never in a million years would he have imagined all the trouble his choices of words would make so many decades after he picked them!

WT has stepped into a pile of their own.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer cult.

This might be interesting enough international news for the media to pick up on if there is a Dist Conv still going on anywhere.

I'm sure all the conventions are over in the US.

Often small town newpapers will give some news space to announce So-So-Small-Town Cong is going to Big City JW Assembly Hall for Circ Assm.

If you see that in your local paper, maybe a follow up with this news article from the UK......

Great point, sir82. Certainly calling someone "conceited" or "proud" isn't nice, but it would never be classified as "Hateful Speech".

I'm not feeling to sorry for the WTBTS at the moment, are you? They brought this on themselves.

Sir82, great post. These verses are one of those many that get lost in the shuffle until an issue like the controversy surrounding the article in question arises. What's crazy to me about it is, how the other translations directly implicate the Watchtower leadership in having wrong motives for what they do. The beginning of that verse calls into question the motives of those who teach matters contrary to that which the Christ taught. It then directly specifies the motives of such ones, and goes so far as to identify the end results of their actions. Consider............

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching,

They've twisted how salvation is to be attained, going from faith in Jesus' ransom to association with their organization, twisted in who's name or what an individual is to get baptized, they've made up their own teachings on what generations mean, and speculated with 100% inaccuracy various prophecies.

they are conceited and understand nothing.
4 he is proud, knowing nothing,

Who goes around proclaiming themselves to be the "faithful and discreet slave" and the only ones spiritually feeding people? Who has a 100% record of making false prophecies and placing a bandaid over their error by labeling the mistakes, "old light", and the new understanding, "new light?" Who demands their flock be uneducated and unquestioning in their loyalty all the while the leadership lives the high life and doesn't earn any of their keep through actual work?

but he [ e ] has a morbid interest in ( I ) controversial questions and ( J ) disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,

From the days of Judge Rutherford onward, this organization's modus operandi was about creating the very things listed in the above text. Badmouthing other religions for publicity, using abusive language towards anyone who disagreed with their teachings, or simply made the mistake of not ever hearing of Jehovah's Witnesses, and nothing has changed as the recent article has proven by encouraging their flock to view former members as, "mentally diseased."

I am sure those of us who have the wts Cd's can find all kind of examples of abusive language toward all kinds of folks- just for starters , gays and the Catholic Church. I love what Blondie found on Muslims, yes it is from 1950 but that is still current , unless they have published anything since then.

Some of the Bible writers were just as vindictive as the Watchtower:

    1John 2:18 Identifies the "antichrist" as those who "went out from us, but they were not of our sort;

for if they had been of our sort they would have remained with us."

So, old John, wondering when the end would come figured that all the people leaving the congregations was and indication "it is the last hour."

Rather than trying to rescue those who left as Jesus instructed, it was much easier to put a label on them. Perfect for an old man. If people that leave are antichrist you don't have to shake your bones to help them.
