It doesn't surprise me . . .
The theme of the defensive stance is always the same . . . equivocating about the scriptual translation and the definition of apostate, both of which avoid the point. The WTS makes it clear in all their literature exactly who they consider apostate . . . you only need to be seen walking into another church. Of course those who leave are going to believe something else . . . and possibly even dare to mention it? . . . whammo! Apostate!
CD is an interesting human phenomenon . . . and places minds miles apart.
Whoever they regard as apostate . . . they are encouraged to hate them . . . . that's the bottom line . . . and they just won't read it.
Well put,Sizemik.

JW's are so "rabid" against those who leave the cult that it's not uncommon for the person to hear "rumors" that they are apostate, when in fact they are not. You just can't leave the JW cult and live a normal life that involves holidays, politics, or considering another faith.
Think About It
Sizemik is spot on about the clouding the issue with the usual methods of arguing about the meaning of words, I laugh though at the result, after all of "Tom's " hot air a couple of others have a go at the meaning of the Gk. word and come to the consensus that it means "mentally defective" !!!
Is it any better to call someone who simply feels your beliefs are wrong "mentally defective" than "mentally diseased" ????
They shot themselves in the foot there.
And of course the point is, not that the words were in parenthesis in the article, as Tom says, it is that they are said about "Apostates", i.e any who disagree with the WT interpretation as it stands this week (it may change 180 degrees next week, and you may not be Apostate then).
They feel free to insult who they like, and cast aspersions on people's mental health or ability, and think they will get away with it, not if we have anything to do with it.
Mental illnesses are brain disorders. They have a biological basis that is influenced by family and other circumstances. Neurology covers brain disorders where life circumstances make no difference. It is time to shed the stigma. Mental illness has nothing to do with weak character. Many geniuses and people who accomplished much on earth were mentally ill. Character is not an issue. Neither is intelligence.
Apostacy and mental illness have no correlation. The Witnesses live in a dark land where science dare not intrude. The phrase is more insulting to mental health consumers than to apostates. Modern society tries hard not to impugn bad acts or shame on something which an individual can not control. Someone with Tourette's Syndrome is viewed differently than something saying outrageous things to shock. Race is viewed differently today. Women are not stereotyped as much as when I was a child. I see no excuse for such ignorance.
