I hope the mosque is built as a tribute to how we are different from fundamentalist Moslems. It highlights that the terrorists were criminal. I must say that I am conversant in local NY MOslem matters. Maybe this iman is a fringe person. I don't know how mainstream he is. The entire neighborhood has changed dramatically since the attacks. It used to be a ghost town at 5 pm.

May be none of my business, but I don't think it is a good idea to have a mosque there. it would feel like celebrating a crime.
