In this 16-minute talk, Dr. Paul Zak argues that morality is biological and not supernatural. He says that oxytocin is a molecule that controls morality. Oxytocin is only found in mammals.

It was fairly interesting, but to answer your question, anyone who has battled to control their own behavior in some way or other, for example some addiction, or anger management, or whatever, will know we are not merely at the mercy of such chemicals.
