TA - Transactional Analysis is many things. First it is philosophy - a point of view about people. Second, it is a 'theory' of personality development, intrapsychic functioning, and interpersonal behaviour. Third it is a system of techniques designed to help people understand & change there feelings and behaviours. All these aspects are thoroughly interconnected - even though we occasionally discuss each of them separately.

To really appreciate both the theory & the techniques you must first understand the framework which the philosophy provides for them. TA espouses a positive, humanistic philosophy which not only provides a foundation for its many applications, but also directly promotes change by allowing the process to be safe, exciting, and often even fun.

I personally encourage the use of TA - Transactional Analysis as a positive tool in ex jw recovery, it is easy to learn and leaves you with the available options that feel right for you, an excellent tool in coming to the position of making your own imformed choices and taking responsibility for your own actions.

    Mark,

I keeping with what you said, there would be fewer flame wars here if people would stay in their Adult ego state rather than moving into the Parent or Child state.

    Hi Mark,

Is there a book that you would recommend or a web site? I've never heard of TA, but you've picqued my curiousity.

    Patio,

Games People Play by Eric Berne, and I'm Ok, You're OK, by Harris. Start with Berne first. He is the author of the concept. It is a very insightful book.

Also by Eric Berne 1910 - 1970? (I think), wrote: The Total Handbook of Transactional Analysis.

Try those terms in a search engine such as www.alltheweb.com and see what you come up with.

Gestalt Theory, with TA, I found especially useful in coming to more of an awareness, understanding, of freeing my cult mentality controlled thinking.

I hope you find this useful.

Btw, someone above posted the assumption, 'I'm OK, Your'e OK', this underlines the premise of transactional analysis.

What I like especially about it, is the simplicity of the language used. OK, it might empirically jump around a bit, but the links made are so easy to cross apply to understand where you are right now.

Excellent for all forms of ontological insecurity, in assistance to a safer place within.

    Cheers!!

Thanks all for the info. I'll look into it. Sounds interesting. Another take on the I'm ok, is i'm not ok, you're not ok and that's ok.

    Patio,

Your last comment is exactly what Albert Ellis would say. To look at his ideas, go to the thread, 10 nutty ideas. I think Ellis's ideas are better than the I'm OK, Your OK idea. However, Berne's book is outstanding.
