god cannot be tried with evil? something like that. seems like that is a good starting point for some pretty intense logic inconsistencies no?

James 1:13, dear Cap'n (peace to you):
"When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone..."
Peace!

aguest thanks. which translation is that? i'm wondering if the NWT is a bit different. that verse seems to be explicitly saying that god does not tempt in the sense that he would not mislead people in a calamitous way....i'm thinking it must be another verse, or maybe NWT states it differently. the verse i'm thinking of (at least from my memory) i seem to recall states more directly, in terms of god and his inability to do evil in any way shape or form.

from the CD-ROM:
(James 1:12-15)12 Happy is the man that keeps on enduring trial, because on becoming approved he will receive the crown of life, which Jehovah promised to those who continue loving him. 13 When under trial, let no one say: "I am being tried by God." For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. 14 But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.

This scripture that God doesn't test doesn't seem to correlate with Genesis 22:1
NIV 'Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.'
I'm no scholar (Like Fred Franz claimed to be), but I came accross this : '.....original here is very emphatic: ??????? ??? ?? ????? vehaelohim nissah eth Abraham, "And the Elohim he tried this Abraham;" '
It looks like a contradiction in the Bible to me....but....hey, I'm open to options.

May you all have peace! Abraham was not "under trial" (i.e., undergoing a bad spot in his life)... such that he could say such a trial was brought on by God (i.e., brought a calamity upon his life as a test... in the manner of Job's friends, Zophar, Bildad, and Eliphaz, who suggested that Job's "problems" were being brought upon him by God. Job himself did, but excused it because he believed it was God's right to give us bad as well as good. All four men were wrong, as it wasn't God who was bringing calamity upon Job at all).
Nor was Abraham tried/tested/tempted by God with evil. The "test" was as to his loyalty, not his integrity. So, no "pressure" [of life] was placed on Abraham. To the contrary, Abraham was very much prospered by God. Job, who had also been prospered by God, was the one who was tested "with evil"; however, HIS test/trial was brought on by the Adversary. NOT God.
Of course, some might (will) say, "Well, God let it happen, so..." but that's an unfair comparison. The Adversary could, at any time, have chosen NOT to bring trial upon Job - he did not. HE had a point to prove, not God. God just gave him leeway to prove that point... because He knew the Adversary wouldn't/couldn't so prove it, at least as to Job (as the rest of us... well, as a species we're not doing so well). Job also could have, at any time, chosen to do what the Adversary said he would, accused ALL of us of: curse God because of the calamities coming upon his life. He didn't, though. Rather, HE showed that his love for and loyalty to God had absolutely NOTHING to do with the state of his physical life. In doing so, HE answered for himself... rather than doing what most seem to want: have God answer FOR us. The latter, however, proves nothing... except that God doesn't trust us enough... doesn't believe we CAN or WILL prove the Adversary the liar that he is... and so, to cover that up... intervenes. Rather than allowing the "challenge" to be proven by US.
Dear ones, you have got to learn to stop trying to find fault. If you continue, you will always find it... because you will see (and understand) whatever it is you WANT to see and understand; however, you will never find/see God... because you're not looking at Christ. Christ, the IMAGE of God... never tried anyone (brought calamity upon them as a test).
If you continue to LOOK for unrighteousness in the Most Holy One of Israel... you will SEE unrighteousness. In Him... and in others... where there IS none. If, however, you look at Christ... and "keep seeking the kingdom and God's RIGHTEOUSNESS... perhaps your eyes will be OPENED as to Him... so that, at some point, you will receive the promise, as well... and be LIKE God: knowing good (life) AND bad (death)... and yet, living. Because that IS the promise... from GOD... and has always been.
Again, I bid you peace!
