No. It claims "we have already entered the 'time of trouble'" -- viz. since 1874 -- "which is to continue 40 years", ergo 1914...

The promotional hype from past charlatans.

This is truly where the WTS/JWS has its foundational roots.

Not so much from C Russell, since he got caught up as just another consuming person of this hype as well.

The apparent weak standard of education for good part of the population of that era, helped in gravitating the public's interest.

They knew what the bible was and there was a perceivable amount of respect for it among the population.

Not to mention the respect for people who (Clergy) were connected to it as identifiable preachers.

Probably more so then today.

How many of those people from 1877 would have thought the end would not have come even in 2012 more than a 100 years later?
