  Sudbury: Jehovah’s Witness jailed for “catalogue” of sexual offences

  A JEHOVAH’S Witness has been jailed for three and a half years for “a catalogue” of sexual offences on two schoolgirls more than 15 years ago.

  Sentencing 40-year-old Paul Wood, formerly of Sudbury, Judge David Goodin said that not surprisingly the impact of the offences on his two victims was still affecting them.

  During a trial last year Ipswich Crown Court heard that Wood had indecently touched the girls’ breasts while play-fighting with them.

  One of the victims also claimed that further incidents had taken place in Wood’s car when he had got her to touch him indecently over his clothing and had touched her over her clothing

  The same victim also claimed that Wood had touched her intimately on one occasion under her clothing and said he had bought her underwear he wanted her to wear.

  The court heard that Wood had asked the other victim to put on his wife’s underwear after saying she no longer wore it.

  The victims made allegations to the police after hearing in 2009 that Wood was taking up a role with Jehovah’s Witnesses in another part of the country that would have brought him into contact with young women.

  The court heard that in 2000 the victims told Jehovah’s Witness elders in west Suffolk about what Wood had allegedly done to them but it was left to the girls to decide if they wanted to go to the police.

  Andrew Thompson, prosecuting, said that as the girls did not want to go to the police nothing was done then.

  Wood, who now lives in Derbyshire, was found guilty by majority verdicts of 10-2 of nine offences of indecent assault on two schoolgirls when they were aged between eight and 15. He was found not guilty of raping a third alleged victim, aged 17.

  Wood denied a total of 17 offences of indecent assault, three offences of rape and one of attempted rape.

  After returning guilty verdicts on the nine offences of indecent assault and a not-guilty verdict on one rape charge, the jury was discharged from returning verdicts on the remaining charges.

  At yesterday’s sentencing hearing Mr Thompson offered no evidence on those charges and Judge Goodin directed not-guilty verdicts should be entered on the court record.

  Wood was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and was made the subject of a sexual offences prevention order restricting his future contact with children under 18.

  Steven Dyble, for Wood, said his client had not had any previous convictions for sexual offences and had not committed any further offences in the last 14 years.

  He said Wood was aged between 20 and 26 at the time of the offences and claimed he had been wrongly convicted.

  What I would like,if the media would report the headline as "AN ORDINED MINISTER OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESS"

  You see they always report the clergy of religion that way.As an example 'A ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIEST"

  Since the WBTS say any baptist J.W. is an 'ORDINED MINISTER"

  All reports of wrong donig by J.W. should be reported as An ordined minister of J.W.

  EX. Joe Doe an ordined minister of J.W. got disfellow ship for adultry.Or howabout a 9 year old ordined minister of J.W. was abused by

  her father who is an ordined minister of J.W.

  If the media would report things like that,then J.W. would not be like flies on hot dung when the hear of reports of a R.C. priest and child porn.

  good point, Bobid. I think the publics association of pedophilia with the Catholic Church is because of the church's magnitude in general. Possibly someone could calculate the percentage that would show the JW problem in proportion.

  It seems that there is a couple of generations of British sexual deviates that supposedly was born of the Victorian era mores. Can anyone comment of that phenom.?

  And therin lies a big part of the problem with WT society child abuse policies. First off Paul Wood had NO RIGHT to even BE OFFERED another"role" by the WT society or JW elders in a position of ANYTHING which would put him in direct contact with young minor females . There is no excuse that the WT society OR the elders might offer up to justify letting this weasel have ANY position in their organization as the elders KNEW 9 years earlier in 2000 what this freak had done ! AND - The elders had a moral obligation to these girls to responsibly go to police authorities and not pass the buck to them to do it themselves . Like the girls would have the courage to even do it out of the humiliation they had already suffered ??

  I swear to God ( if there is one ) - one scripture I learned as a JW still rings pretty true in my ears " foolishness has been put in many high positions " - or something like that. How many more of these JW pedophiles will have to be knocked out of the closet before the WT society changes their child abuse policies ? I'm afraid it won't happen because if I'm a betting man I'd say there are probably higher ups in positions of power who are committing molestations themselves. If you shine a light in the corner cabinet where some cockroaches are- the bigger cockroaches will start to scatter and before you know it you have cockroaches scurying around by the hundreds trying to escape the bigger light shown on their darkness and dirty deeds.

  I know personally a lot of victims of JW child abuse. This has to stop. Hopefully the Australia Child abuse scandal will bring more light to bear on the WT society and squash the cockroaches responsible for these injustices

  The big new light in this summers District Conventions should be a name change to "Jehovah's Cockroaches". After the announcement they will be selling a new release book that has pop-up antenna.

  A PAEDOPHILE Jehovah’s Witness who abused young girls has been thrown behind bars for three-and-a-half years.

  Paul Wood, 40, assaulted the girls, aged between 10 and 15, at his home, in a car and at a disused airfield.

  Wood, of Station Road, Woodville, was found guilty of nine indecent assaults but cleared of a rape allegation made by one of the girls.

  The sex offender, who committed his crimes while living in Suffolk in the 1990s, claimed his two victims had ‘made up’ their evidence.

  Judge David Goodin, sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court, said: “You were a young man but they are most serious offences.”

  Prosecutors claimed during Wood’s trial last year he had forced himself on the underage girls in Sudbury, Suffolk, between 1993 and 1998.

  Steven Dyble, defending, told the court Wood was a man of previous good character who had done his best to live an ‘industrious life’.

  Wood’s last offence was committed in 1998. Mr Dyble said: “During the last 14 years, there has been no suggestion of any inappropriate behaviour.”

  Judge Goodin told Wood that in addition to the jail term, he would be made subject to the terms of a sexual offences prevention order.

  The order bans Wood from living in the same house or being in the presence of under-18s without their parents being present and aware of his convictions.

  He is also banned from contacting his two victims and from carrying out work at any school or voluntary organisation.

  Judge Goodin said that Wood would be allowed to attend his place of worship — but only on the condition he was always supervised if potentially being in contact with anyone under 18.

  During Wood's trial in September, the jury failed to reach verdicts on another 11 indecent assault charges. The judge ordered these to be recorded as not guilty verdicts.

  You goto wonder, how pedophiles manage to survive for so long in the organisation after all that doctrination about evil men in the world. Dont the kids learn anything from all those talks. After all those talks where the org and elders are praised why is it kids have so little trust in elders ? I know that elders often let the kids and families down, but im amazed just how weak the kids are, in that they have no other respectable old ones they can ask for help besides their parents.
