    *** Text for February-19-12 ***
    Sunday, February 19
Happy are those hungering and thirsting for righteousness.-Matt. 5:6.
Genuine Christians today need to guard against being unduly influenced by the pleasure-mad spirit of this world. (Eph. 2:2-5) Otherwise, we may be ensnared by "the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the showy display of one's means of life." (1 John 2:16) Or we may mistakenly believe that yielding to the desires of the flesh will bring refreshment. (Rom. 8:6) For example, some people have turned to drug and alcohol abuse, pornography, extreme sports, or various illicit activities in an effort to excite their senses. The "crafty acts" of Satan are intended to mislead by giving one a perverted sense of refreshment. (Eph. 6:11, ftn.) When we are attuned to Jehovah's regulations, we recognize that any pleasures offered by this world are momentary. (Heb. 11:25) True refreshment, the kind that brings a deep, long-lasting sense of joy and satisfaction, comes from doing our heavenly Father's will. w10 6/15 5:17, 19

So, since this is directed at "genuine christians" does it mean that the examples given are a big problem within their midst, that must be addressed?

Remember - The daily text is exclusively for jw's. It seems that the examples are quite extreme. Do they really have to counsel members about such activities?

Alcohol has always been a common problem. Porn is a BIG problem in the Organization. I've heard it said that they had to repeal their "zero tolerance" on use of porn of there would be NO Elders or MS able to continue to serve. They have now specified "soft porn" vs. other degraded forms of porn.

it's always an extreme. How about going to the park and playing ball with some friends? Or going bowling after dinner with friends. And then they have to compare it with other extremes. Working out = porn. Don't these people have any idea what moderation is?

To the talking heads in brooklyn, ANYTHING that is NOT selling their substandard literature is a waste of time and detrimental to one's spirituality. regardless of how beneficial something may be for an individual, the HIVE MIND dictates that it is selfish and cruel to the hive.

Naaaah, it's just more of the "us' and 'them" descriptions, to make the Witnesses feel even more self-righteous. It says "some people have turned to....", meaning those who aren't reading their Daily text and are either 'wordly' or are being shunned already.

I agree transhuman68, but it only makes sense in a witness type way. Even though they would deny these problems exist within they will bring them up. But for those who know better it is obvious they feel they need to browbeat the flock. Remember this info is in their little daily counsel booklet taken from their "own" watchtower.

I'm just imagining extreme jaywalkers right now...

drug abuse - seldom a problem (smoking perhaps if you count that)

alcohol abuse - big problem but hardly picked up on, what happens in the bar, stays in the bar!

pornography - always going on about it, elders an min servants often get an ear bashing I hear

    extreme sports - ?

various illicit activities in an effort to excite their senses :

    1. Not legallypermittedorauthorized;unlicensed;unlawful.

    2. disapproved of or not permitted for moral or ethicalreasons Yeh, plenty of this about
