    Waiting,

    On the self esteem thread you brought up some psych. stuff, which I did not comment on, because the discussion took a different direction, so let me refer to my notes and I will put some reply stuff.

    Blank slate at birth: Used to be the prevailing thought but it is now known theat we are prewired to be receptive to certain kinds of learning. It is even known that some learning goes on in the womb. Now, isn't that something! However, that doesn't change the fact that our envirnement in the first few years of our lives is very important in our later developement. An impoverished physical or emotional environement can have far reaching effects. The person may have some recovery, but the negatives may not be totally reversible. I would say that the later in childhood that we experience trauma, the more likely it is that we can recover.

    Genetics: you mentioned some examples, shyness, IQ, sense of humor, artistic talent, and of course there other traits or conditions that can be inherited.

    I will just talk about one at this point. Jerome Kagan conducted a study that showed that about 10% of children are born shy. He concludes that parents should be aware of this and not force or shame a child into being aggresive and bold. If shyness causes a child some problems, a parent can help that child change a little bit to cope better with other kids. Likewise, a shy adult can learn to change a bit and overcome problems that shyness causes them. As with any trait, shyness has some advantages, and does not have to be viewed as a weakness.

    Well, I was going to write more, but I have go check on the pasta sauce my wife left on the stove for me. She is baby sitting our grandson, and left me to may own devices.

    Well, I'm back.

    Another subject you brought was Freud and his theories. Freud developed two theories and a method. He developed a theory of childhood emotional developement, a theory of personality, and method of treatment, psychoanalysis. He is also credited with coming up with the concept of the defense mechanisms, but these were formulated by his daughter Anna.

    Child developement: Waiting, I imagine that your prof. is somewhat circumspect in his judgement of the theories in psych, tries to present them objectively, and lets the student decide. My opinion is that this theory is down right goofy. If Freud practiced a defense mechanism, it was one of denial. He placed too much emphasis on the child's sexuality and not enough on the inappropriate sexuality of adults who sexually abused children.

    Personality: It is a theory that can't be proved or disproved. He replaced the concept of morals and good and bad with an unrestrained id (bad), and a balance between the id, ego, and superego for good. His ideas are interesting on a qualitative level, but can not be subject to scientific proof.

    Psychoanalysis: As I have written earlier, it is a relatively ineffective and inefficient method.

    I do believe that the concepts of the unconscious and the defense mechanisms have merit. I was sceptical about the power of unconscious processes until I saw a video on Facilitated Communication which I may explain later.

    Waiting, does your prof show videos? I found some that have a powerful effect in demonstrating some phenomena.

    Well, I must be off on another break. Perhaps, I am ADD, needing all these breaks. Well, if I am, I don't really care.

    Larc:

    Temperament theory interests me. I see people as love,wisdom,justice or power people.

    Love = Phlegmatic
    Wisdom = Sanguinic
    Justice = Melancholic
    Power = Choleric

    This also underlies my feelings that there can't be a persoal God. Personality is marked by both an excess in one or more aspects and a deficiency in others. When a person exhibits equal weight on all of the dimensions of a test it is usually an indication that they need to re-test.

    proplog,

    I don't know if there is a paricular personality theory that incorporates the four characteristics you list. There are many theories, and there may be one that correspoonds to your thinking.

    In recent times, there has been a lot of focus on five particular factors. These are more narrowly defined, specific and tied to behaviour than the four that you propose. These five are 1. Introverion - Extraversion, 2. Agreeableness - Sociability, 3. Conscientiousness, 4. Emotional Stability, and 5. Intellectual Openess - Flexibility.

    Tina stated that Eyzenck was the first to talk about Extraversion. That is not quite true. Carl Gustav Jung was the first to incorporate this trait into a personality theory. Eyzenck was the first to try to measure it.
