" In the Republic of Ireland, proposals have recently been announced in 2011 to make failure to report an allegation of child abuse a crime, even if it was made during a confession. These proposals were prompted by several sex abuse scandals, but have caused controversy on the grounds that such a law would compromise the Seal of the Confessional. Do your own research on this.. But I think it could set a precedent regarding abuse coverups.

I do not understand why this is headed '...UK mandatory reporting...' when it has nothing to do with the UK!

It is only to do with The Irish Republic as Alan Shatter is the Minister of Justice in Dublin.

You're quite right. I apologise, it should have been entitled ' In relation to mandatory reporting, here's an interesting example from Ireland ' . I mentally grouped them with the UK for some reason. I'm off before I make a further **** of myself.

Thanks for posting Q.O in the U.K the Priest- penitent relationship is not so sacrosanct that a crime discovered this way is excluded from the need to report, although many a RC priest may well overide the law.

So here, in the U.K the JW Elders have always had it incumbent in law that they report a crime once they have learned of it, of course they think they are above the law and would not do so without their two witnesses to the crime, in abuse cases more often than not impossible to provide. They may excuse their inaction by saying they cannot establish beyond doubt whether a crime has occurred, so what ? let the experts in crime management make that judgement.

I do hope that the law gets stronger in Eire, a crime should be reported, of whatever nature and however discovered, to do any less is immoral.

A witness girl I know in Australia told me that one of the elders read a letter to their congregation saying that they were to report any cases or suspect cases of child abuse to the proper authorities..no exceptions.

The thing I found interesting was that the elers daughter had been sexually abused in the same congregation..

I often wonder if the letter would have been read had it not been the elders daughter that was abused..
