I've been meaning to ask this for a while.
Just what, exactly, do the JW's mean by "shepherding"?
Being a naive ex-/ or rather lapsed Catholic I assumed that "shepherding" calls were the same thing as pastoral visits by a priest, which involve basically a friendly cup of tea/coffee and a chat, or a visit in hospital to the sick.
It's gradually dawning on me that there's not a lot that's pastoral about "shepherding" visits by the JW's. Reading through STFOG, I have a feeling that their brand of shepherds are a mixture of policeman and agents provocateurs.
Similarly with "counsel", and "counselling". In the real, non JW world, to counsel is to give advice, and counselling involves empathetic and skilled listening, with warm intent to help and heal the person. JW counselling, on the other hand, seem to use the word to mean something like "questioning a sinner and making sure that he is found guilty", and then taking measures that, with policemen, would involve placing him under arrest and bringing him to court, and with JW elders mean no less than removing "privileges" from him and then taking measures up to and including disfellowshipping.
Another JW weasel word could be "encouraging"/"encouragement"/"encourage". Just what exactly do they mean by it, when used in connection with elders and elders' visits? I don't think I know, but I have a strong feeling it's not quite what the rest of the world takes it to mean.
Thanks, everyone!
