    Hey x

I do love the interest and excitment some here have for learning. Once one decides truth is more important than comfort, the whole world opens up. Ironically, evidence and knowledge leads (imho) to comfort, appreciation for life and more wonder than any pseudo-science or mythical diety can dream up.

Are you interested in evolution and science? You dont have to be in school/college/university to take part.

Why not set your self a bit of an exciting task that will get you more informed about the process of evolution AND give you an answer to an age old question often asked of evolution. How can an eye come from nothing?

Did an eye come from nothing? Is a good place to start. If this interests you why not research these few topics (see below) and you can start your own science research project. Perhaps a few of you can work together to see what information you can find. It doesnt matter if it takes you a day or a year, I really think it is an important thing to learn. The information is freely available for anyone interested.

In order to do the research, you can use google (believe it or not) and for science journals use Google Scholar (some are paid for some are free). There are also plenty of videos and websites that can also help you. Also you can go to the library to fill in the gaps with some great, great texts of knowledge.

(by the way, in science, scientists publish their results by writing papers, these get put in journals. By enlarge, the better the paper the better the journal you will get published in. These journals are the PRIMARY source of information. Here other scientists peer review and test out other peoples papers. Once it is regognised as evidence etc it may be added to the latest editions of textbooks, these are the SECONDARY sources. It is good practice for people to exmine journals, but textbooks are a great source for info too.)

    So where to start?

The eye is made of photo receptors. So why not start with the evolution of photoreceptors an some research into what evolved them and why?

Once you have the photoreceptors explained, (the whole evolutionary process has been mapped out, the information is out there) start looking into the evolution of the eye. How it became more focused and more like our human eye today.

Finally research what is WRONG with our eye, what is shoddy about it and also WHY our human eye is so poorly formed. Are other animals eyes better or worse? Why ? This is VERY fascinating stuff and will help you with your quest for truth and spirituality.

I hope this idea excites the interest and intelligence of some on the board. Perhaps some here like Cofty, New Chapter Zidd can come and help out. I will keep an "eye" (lol) as I revise for my exams.

I thought of some questions you could base your research around, I hope you have fun with it.

How the eye works on a basic level, what are its basic parts, what is photoreceptor?

Research and evidence for the evolution of photoreceptors.

What organisms evolved photoreceptors and why?

The evolution of the eye. How it became better at its objective, from the earliest evidence for light detectors to todays eye.

How long did this take, is this enough time?

What other eyes evolved and are some better than others?

Did the eye just come from nothing or arrive by chance?

Was there a thought process, intelligence, forethought involved in the formation of the eye? What motivated its progress?

What questions remain about the evolution of the eye?

OOoooooh...good thread snare.........are we going to be sharing our finds on here? I have a feeling just what you have suggested will keep me busy for quite a while...

    Great thread idea snare&racket.

I hope some take up your challenge, its the most fascinating subject I have ever studied. I never stop having wow! moments.

The origins of photo-receptors is very cool.

You might want to add the origin and diversity of colour vision to that list of questions?

The title certainly commanded my attention. When I was in 8th grade, I wanted to believe in the Witness b/c my parents did. I also wanted to hang out with the other college prep students. We had to do a term paper on evolution. I read the JW books and even arranged for a pass to use the adult part of the library. I took home about twenty books.

So I stayed with my family. The science teacher gave me a D. My evolution believing classmates were outraged. They thought I was loony but saw all the effort I put into the project. My grade was elevated to a B-. It was my worse junior and high school grade.

Deep down I knew the teacher was right and my parents were wrong. It wasn't as bad as mom being expelled from school b/c of the flag salute but I felt foolish. What is a kid supposed to do? If my father ever found out that I supported evolution, I would be beaten and then killed. Sadly, this is the same scenario that resulted in mom's expulsion.

I don't see how any well read, half way intelligent person can believe in creation alone. Sometimes I wonder about intelligent design. Why can't evolution be the process by which God created?
