The best movie of the year has to be "Memento." Reasons why:
1) Great acting
2) Good story (about a man with permanant short-term memory loss who is trying to find the man who killed his wife.)
3) Structure of the movie (the whole movie is shown is fragments. Plus the movie story is shown backwards. The movie begins at the end of the story and ends at the beginning.)
4) Complex plot (You have to see the movie at least three or four times to completely understand it.)
I can't believe it was not nominated for a best picture Oscar!

Amelie was the most inventive movie of the year.
Quite a shame it didn't at least win best foreign film.
It made it on to my top 10 list of all time, displacing Star Wars.
Extraordinary film.
Beautiful Mind was a good movie but hardly groundbreaking or "new" in any way. I was glad Ron Howard won best director. I do think he deserved that.
