If you look into the Abyss the Abyss looks into you-Friedrich Nietzsche.
In our darkest hour, we find out who we really are. When faced with going over the edge, or standing firm, this is the time when we are looking into the abyss. It's that simple, for me, at least.

It means, that the Abyss is just a part of yourself.
Looking into the Abyss means to look in your own undone face. Down there all your secret fears and desires are dwelling, waiting for you to catch a glimpse of them. Then they are starring at you saying: We are part of you, even when you deny it.
The quote probably means in our lonest hour we often find out our true nature and it scares us.
The abyss can act like a mirror that reflect onto the self.
