This thread is for those on the UK side of the pond, I guess our friends in the U.S would not have been exposed to the comedy genius of Eric.

I say "unrecognised" in the thread title with recognition that many many people here in the U.K had great affection for Eric and did appreciate his prodigious talent, but I still feel it would have been good if he had received even more in the of the way of approbation and appreciation in his lifetime.

R.I.P Eric, you were one of a kind.

100% agree. He was a great character, very much loved by all accounts. Didn't he 'write' ''The Plank''?

MC - He did indeed write The Plank - back in the 60's I believe. Most remembered for the sitcom with Hattie Jacques and was also in one of the Harry Potter films amongst many many other films/tv programmes. Very sad - definitely one of the greats. RIP

My sense of humour (very British, very black...) was moulded in my preteen years due to a great show called "Sykes and A..." Eric and Hattie (Jaques) were an incredible team (played brother and sister...a smart move) backed with some great writing from Eric. He goes to his grave knowing he is truly one of the fathers of modern British comedy. His style spawned a number of other greats such as the Pythons and Ricky Gervais. He will be missed, but we have his legacy....
