How Stratton Can Win

It's pretty much assured that Stratton will lose in court

but the decision handed down may have the effect of strongly
defining how the door to door work can be legally limited.
It may emphasize that 'do not calls' are on solid legal ground
    or allow other impediments.

What stops Stratton from sending out stamped self addressed
envelopes along with a simple document saying "if you don't
want Witnesses at your door, please sign and return this
do not call statement. If any come to your door, after you
have returned this agreement, please get their name and call
    your local police." ?

Why can't any community do this and profit by collecting fines?

This could be a local source of revenue for some small towns,
along with the usual speed traps they utilize.

I think it's a good idea. It would make the JWs service much easier with a list of no-calls. That would leave it clear those that are interested and those that are not. Damn, those JWs win again.

I suggested this very idea a while back. This would be the perfect solution for them - it's free, easy, and it's already law.

I'm not sure about the US, but in Canada, privacy protection is federally legislated, so the town wouldn't profit from fines. However, once an organization is formally notified of the householder's desire not to be contacted, the organization must comply for a certain number of years.

In addition, the territory will then shrink, meaning the Witnesses will call much more often at the calls that are left, pissing them off even more.

I need clarification on a couple of points.

First is the scope of the issue before the United States Supreme Court. I understood from the news articles that the main issue is whether anonymous speech (such as approaching people on the streets or at their homes) can be hindered by draconian licensing rules such as Stratton, Ohio tried to impose on JW's. I don't know that the Supreme Court has the time or inclination to address other aspects of this case, such as how JW's can be reasonably restricted if the householder does not wish to ever be called on.

Secondly, as far as the idea of registering all the households that don't wish to be called on and then enforcing it through the police: I believe this idea would create an amount of administration that the city wouldn't want to go through. What happens when people move? How often do you "renew" these 'do not call' registrations, so as to keep them current? And how would you prevent householders from making false-alarm calls against the JW's? Or how could a his-word-against-my-word situation be prevented, where a householder says JW's DID call but the JW's (using Theocratic War Strategy) say they didn't? What town wants these types of additional court cases?

I think the change proposed in this thread may have too many problems to implement. People just need the backbone or resolve to keep saying no to JW's as they exercise the free-speech rights the WT Society has won for them, as they keep slaving to gain status within their congregation!

First, as to 'time and inclination', the Supreme Court may feel
compelled to offer some reasonable alternative that forms part of
their collective reply, in regard to keeping undesirables away
from the publics doors. They may feel they have to clarify
what towns can and can't legislate on the topic. They may also
comment on the issue of demanding id's.

As to paper work and fines, it's not that hard. A secretary
receives the replies and types up a list. They stick it in a
file and if the police get a call, they check the list.
They might also ask householders to get license numbers.
The list could be renewed each year and 'my word against yours'
situations are no different from any other misdemeanor that
police handle every day. If they get caught lying, put them
in jail and increase the fine - and call the local media.
    ("Witness Solicitors Caught Lying")

It's not that hard - and you can make it easier by informing
local fundamentalists of the law. I wouldn't be surprized if
they took photos for the police.

Let me share with you what we are currently doing in our Home Owners association. We have lots of vendors who stop by guys wanting to build decks, patios, cut grass, and JW coming by all the time

well we have tried something in our Cul-de Sac were our home is located

we have a total of 11 homes on our street that ends in a cul-de-sac

well we have suggested to our neighbors to take advantage of a Program that the JW are NOW offering, it is called "DO NOT CALL"

it is free and it helps the jw to be able to be more effective in thier ministry by not calling on those who are already churching going folks and instead they can focus on the lost souls.

I explained it to them that this program is avaiable to anyone who asked to have their house included on this DO NOT CALL list and you don't even have to give your name . they will note the address and inform any jw who may be in the area and they will not call.

well 8 of 11 of my neigbors have requested to have thier house included- i am sure that the elders since they don't even know we live out here are wondering why they are gettting so many request on this one street.

well as a member of the board of home owners we plan on expanding this by informing the rest of the Assoication that this program is availble thru your local congregation of jw and it is Free simply by asking.

WE have a quarterly newletter with tips and updates of event in the community and also various services that many churches offer-
day care, little league, boys scouts, and now JW - DO NOT CALL- LIST

it is going to be a riot- SMILE

you see right now in the State of Md there is a law pending in the Legistlative house that will make it illegal to call anyone on the phone to sell them anything if the householder has added thier name to a DO NOT CALL LIST

so since the JW are way ahead of the Legist. House of MD in that they have had a DO NOT CALL LIST FOR YEARS
then we might as well take advantage of such a "Loving Provision" to have ones home removed from the jw call list

in my view this is what the city of Straton should do, to try and make it a law IS GOOFY IN MY VIEW , but to USE THE WT OWN PROGRAM is a wonderful idea , well we tried it on our street and it has worked well

to stand in my living room and watch the jw look at the territory card and see all those homes they can't call on and then to see them only hit 3 houses out of 11 is wonderful

in my view the DO NOT CALL list is the greatest invention that wt could have come up with to shoot themselves in the foot

    just my 2

Ahhh, the DO NOT CALL lists. I can clearly remember the images in my mind when turning over the territory card and seeing the addresses listed. I remember thinking that the people who had asked to be put on this list were one of two kinds of people...one, a true blue apostate, or two, someone who always verbally fought or threatened us with a weapon. But those were not all. The householder did not have to request to be put on this list. If we were to call on one of the above type persons, most times the car group would write down their address if they felt so inclined as a DO NOT CALL. The purpose of jotting down the address without a request from the householder was for the benefit of the next round of witnesses. We did not want the next group to be surprised by a "demon possessed" person.

God, if I had only listened to those darn apostates sooner rather than running away and writing their address down.....

The DO NOT CALL site is going through a lot of revision at the moment but the standard letters are always available for free download.
Go to http://www.do-not-call.org/diyregistration.htm and let me know what you think. Suggestions for improvements are always welcome.
