The WTBS is like HIV

Was talking to my sister today (she's an MD doing AIDS research at UNM). Mostly we were talking about my wife's medical problems and how the science is advancing. She said that she has lots of patients that became HIV positve twenty years or so ago, assumed it would kill them and made no plans for the future. Now they are in their forties or fifties and waking up to the fact that the future they never planned for is here. So they are suddenly going back to school or working out retirement plans.

Later it struck me that this is more or less what's happened to so many JW's. They planned to be in the new system by now and made no prepartions for a future. So there you go, the Watchtower is the equivalent of a killer virus, except that my sister's HIV patients at least have effective treatment.

At least with AIDS, you are not expected to waste your whole life screeching around preaching to people that are not interested and attend continual boasting sessions. Yes, there is required medication (and I feel suppressed cures, as with everything else). But, no houndings to pious-sneer, or skipping a boasting session, or worrying because you need to follow up on a call because you will murder them otherwise. Nor having to raise children in the cancer--if you have children that do not have HIV, they are not going to have to conform to any rules regarding HIV.

Besides, you can still celebrate Christmas as you see fit. You can attend any church you see fit (including a Satanic one, if you want). You can simply be atheist. You are not relegated to a belief system, aside the general medical cult that affects everyone, that is faulty. No worrying about getting destroyed, no spoiling your vacation with field circus.

The down side is that, with HIV, you cannot simply turn apostate. As a witless, once you turn apostate, you are done with it. The cancer is gone--sure, the damage remains and the opportunity cost you bore as a witless remains. And whatever angels you picked up while a witless are going to give you a miserable time. But, so long as you stay away from the religion in the future, you are free to pick up where you left off. I don't know of anyone that turned apostate from HIV.

There is a new drug that may help in the fight against H.I.V

Perhaps the Internet is the "new drug" that will prevent the spread of the WT virus.
