The UN, Pedophiles, and Faulty JW Arguments

Here is a response I sent to a recently DF'd JW over the UN issue. This person has not been deterred though, they are still clinging to the BOrganization as God's. I have been corresponding somewhat with them, and I just had to reply to the last email I got.

I think this letter may be good for someone just teetering on the edge of JWdom.

In all honesty, I can't think of a better way to RUN somebody back into the Watchtower.

You might consider getting out of the cult exit-counseling business.

So, now I'm going to be on your s**t list too I suppose. Ask me if I care...

In 1975 a crack team of publishers was sentenced to death by a judicial commiteee. They promptly escaped from the cult and now live life on the run. If you have a problem ... and if you can find them ... maybe you can contact the A--postate Team"

    What the hell??

Dung, what's up? That post rather surprised me as I've not known Doug to attack someone just for disagreeing with him.

I haven't read the link yet...I'll go and do that now but remember, what works for one person doesn't work for the next, etc etc.

Ok, I read the letter and I am even more surprised at your response Dung. This isn't in a spirit of attack but a spirit of curiosity. Some of the issues and questions Doug posed in his letter were the VERY ones that tortured me when I was leaving. Unfortunately, I didn't have anyone to help me find answers and I didn't know about support groups or websites, and so on.

Doug, I think the letter was very straightforward and honest. IMO, a person HAS to seriously look at the issue of questioning the actions and the history of the WTS; they have to develop the ability to reason for themselves on whatever is causing them concern. Otherwise, they'll just fall back into blind acceptance of the WTS party line. Good letter. Hard things to hear (read) maybe, but things that need to be said.

What possible reason could there be for a loving, kind, and just Creator with a proven track record to have to “prove” anything to anyone? After all, Jehovah is the Almighty.

What “Bigger Picture” could possibly exist that would morally justify the suffering, turmoil, and murder of countless billions of sentient human beings over many thousands of years? What of these poor people’s right to Free Will? What of their right to live their lives free of the threat of suffering and death at the hands of a supernatural being?

Again I ask you, could there be another explanation? It is not my purpose nor intention to answer this question, but rather, to provoke you to thought.

Can you answer this question? It's a good one. I've always bought the Universal Big Picture argument myself. The father/wayward child illustration was a good one. What OTHER possible explanations are there? Anyone?

    Dung,

I have no earthly idea what you are talking about. The points I made are points that troubled me in the past. I simply thought that perhaps others with similar questions might benefit. You must remember too that this letter addressed things that this person brought up, so those points were relevant to them.

I'm sorry I can't add you to my Shit List, because I don't really have one.

I respect your right to agree or disagree with me or my writings.

BTW, where are your writings? I would be interested to read them. I am always looking for other perspectives that might refine and improve my own.

    All my best to you!

    Doug

    Doug,

There was nothing at all wrong with that letter. It was respectful, reasoned and kind.

    Dana and Fark,

Thank you!!! I appreciate your comments.

    sunscapes,

    You asked:

Can you answer this question? It's a good one. I've always bought the Universal Big Picture argument myself. The father/wayward child illustration was a good one. What OTHER possible explanations are there? Anyone?
Your question is also a good one. Humans have been asking the Big Picture questions since the beginning (whenever that was).

Unfortunately, in my opinion, these questions are unanswerable. We simply do not know where God is, and why He doesn't seem to care about humanity.

Personally, I cannot reconcile the concept of a loving Creator with the suffering of humanity. That is why I am Agnostic--I just don't know. I want to know, but the data is not yet available.

So I wish I could answer your question about my questions. The reason that I wrote the letter the way I did was out of respect for this person's beliefs. I did not want to unnecessarily offend them by telling them that I no longer believe in Jehovah as the Almighty. They must come to that or another conclusion on their own.

Good luck with your own journey!

    Geez Dungbeetle,

Don't tell me the "flavor" of the board has gotten to you? Your post made absolutely no sense to me. Did you even read the letter? I'm just really confused right now. Please tell me this had nothing to do with another poster.

Freepeace. I thought the letter was very good. Please let us know if you get any reply.
    you write:
"Any idea how much emotional energy it requires to continually suppress one’s moral values, especially when prompted by an organization claiming to be God’s one and true Organization? An enormous amount."

Well put, its exhausting. And isn't it sad that the members of the org so out spoken with THEIR claims of righteousness must hide what they feel is right inside to stay in the group. Now that is peer pressure.

    and:
"I am always looking for other perspectives that might refine and improve my own."

An excellent book called "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong, an Ex-nun.
(Notice the title not "The" history... )
It has 3 historic perspectives - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Very well cited, indexes, references to check. An excellent piece of research. It gives a whole new dimension to the word "God" and mankind's attempt to define, explain, & understand the concept.
