The Watchtowers Compassion Toilet

We all know what toilets are for - the disposing of
    waste, dead goldfish, etc.

Now, the Watchtower Society finds charity and compassion
to be highly inconvenient things - giving to the poor
may divert money from their own coffers, compassion might
interfere with obedience to Watchtower rules (those
disfellowshipped relatives!) or acts of loving charity
may inhibit the important work of selling magazines
    door to door.

So, they flush these offending qualities away by
emphasizing how unnecessary they are in comparison
to their "ministry" -a "loving" work, warning people that billions
of non-JWS will be "soon" slaughtered by God.

Watch how this process occurs in this weekend's
Watchtower study: pg 16, paragraph 8

"Jehovah's Witnesses are known throughout the world
for their self sacrificing spirit, helping their brothers
and their neighbors and expending themselves to communicate
    Bible truth to their fellowmen".

The surrounding pictures give a vague image of helping a person
with medication and loading a truck. Much - indeed, neverending
emphasis is placed on their 'ministry' - but little if any
specific directives are developed on kindness or charity,
showing how little they care about it.

Paragraphs like this one usually elict comments ridiculing
churches for gifts of mercy (like at 9-11) while self
    righteous, tragedy exploiting Witnesses "comfort"
victims "with the truth". This kind of "the hell with compassion,
let's do field service instead" carries a price - such as:

Witness children, who rebel, leave home - and leave parents
in tears, wondering how they could have raised such cold-hearted
and mercenary offspring. Do you really have to wonder?

Congregations filled with hate. Think I'm exaggerating? After
years of being an elder, I simply gave up at BEING SHOCKED
at how many Witnesses hated each other. Have you ever felt like giving
up as Theocratic School Overseer because so many sisters WON'T
give talks with any (list 'em) sisters they hate? Ever see Witness
families live NEXT DOOR to each other, but never speak?
When you see a brother arranging groups for service, I can guarantee
he is silently thinking "she won't work with her, he won't work with.."
AND THEN THERE'S THE ELDERS!!!!!! I just couldn't believe the
continuing VENOM that went on DECADE AFTER DECADE between elders
or entire bodies of elders! What I saw and felt was NOT CHRISTIANITY
among brothers - it was unending 'tribalism' like Afghanistan!
It isn't new either - many brothers in Germany ended up in concentration camps because other "faithful servants of Jehovah"
    RATTED THEM OUT WILLINGLY!

Congregations filled with mental and emotional illness - God! Is this
ever a perfectly designed SCAM! Take one Witness, fill them with
propaganda and paranoia ("the world is evil and filled with demon
influence"), add generous helpings of guilt, THEN send them out
in an unsuccessful "ministry" where they will become acquainted
with the MOST MARGINAL AND UNSUCCESSFUL members of society (i.e.
the only people who will listen) and WHAT HAVE YOU GOT?
THE PERFECT DECEPTION! Because that Witness is now blind to the
reality of just how SICK members of the average congregation
are! "It's just life in Satan's system of things". Really! I haven't
met ANYONE in my business in the world who secretly cuts themselves,
has multiple personalites, or has secret suburban Satanists for parents!

There's more details in this same vein - just use a little
imagination - I recall the astonishment in Bethel at the contrast
between the religion of Watchtower images - and the harsh,
unreasoning reality of Bethel life - newboys used to note this,
all the time. You may also note zealous elders dumping the
responsibility of sick, aged parents on pliable relatives -
the Society at least tried to counsel on this subject - but with
the unrelenting pressure to score useless hours in a dead ministry,
I think they finally gave up.

In fact, I think the Society has largely abandoned any specifics
on loving Christian behavior because they feel it just makes them
look bad ("just more ammunition for opposers!"). They certainly
haven't given up because everything has improved! How sad -
given the above and their declining revenues, they probably find
that spin doctoring and image manipulation is a lot easier

    and more cost effective

This is a really good composition, metatron...

You could send this to JWs and I'm sure they would read it...just needs to start with the more compassionate comments (of which there are plenty) and finish with the comments about the toilet... so as not to offend.

Your article remind me how glad I am that I never had to experience life as a JW elder. (I was appointed MS at 22 but didn't last long )

    Thanks,

    Thanks, cello

I take my cue from the prophets of old
who said or did outrageous things
(look at what Ezekiel said about Israel as a prostitute
    lovers - "hung like horses")

    otherwise, it all gets forgotten

    Thanks again

Oh my gosh. That was wonderful. I read it twice and it made me feel stronger in my resolve. The multi-cultural image they give in their literature about men of all nations loving one another sure got a licking from you. Some witnesses can't even get along with their witness neighbors or those in the Kingdom Hall. These are the people who are supposed to give their lives for one another! What a hoot! I'm going back to read it again!

Picosito - very good essay. Another example of something that we dealt with as former elders, field service arrangers, etc., but passed off as immaturity and something that we put in "Jehovah's hands".

One question - can you pass thing along to Frank Kavelin somehow?

    All best,
    Mak

Some men worship rank, some worship heroes, some worship power, some worship God, & over these ideals they dispute & cannot unite--but they all worship money.

    Right On, Metatron......

I also was an elder who thought elders would take the lead in love...it was more like hate and rivalry.

Speaking of Men of All Nations Loving One Another.....That was just a pile of bullshit in reality. The Spanish did not like the English and called them "Americanos" while calling themselves "Mexicanos." All they cared about was making disciples in Spanish, even if the Hispanic householder was more proficient in English. It was like scoring points in a football game for your team rather than what was for the best spiritual advantage of the householder or Bible "study."

Whatever the hell real Christianity may be, it certainly is not found among Jehovah's Witnesses!!!

    Metatron,
Wonderful post! Like everyone else said, you made very good points. It really was like a punch in the belly, it knocked the wind out of me! I like posts that say it straight...

Wonder what it would do to a member at Bethel? Hmmm....
