Romney and Cognitive Dissonance

Has anyone else who's following the Presidential campaign noticed that Mitt Romney shows classic signs of a behavior common among members of high-control religions, one we as former dubs recognize, a condition known as Cognitive Dissonance?

It would explain his inability to "connect" with people. His stilted phrasing in many of his speeches and comments. His otherwise inexplicable omission of support for the troops and his strategy for fighting the ongoing war in Afghanistan when he accepted his party's nomination at the convention.

The press reports often that Mr. Romney appears aloof from the concerns of average Americans. Is this a result of belonging to a high-control religion which fosters a culture of "us versus them"? Is he uncomfortable around "worldly" people (i.e., non-Mormons)? Does he see the world through a highly skewed vision as a result of his lifelong indoctrination in Mormon principles and beliefs (particularly the ones he never talks about in public)?

Symptoms of cognitive dissonance have been covered in detail on this forum; it is the ability to hold two conflicting thoughts at once and explain away or compartmentalize them. It impacts JWs and they way they comport themselves in what they see as a hostile world. That's why, as dubs, we went door to door and did NOT say, "The world as we know it is coming to a cataclysmic end very soon and God will destroy every man, woman and child who is not a JW, so you'd better listen carefully and act quickly or you're doomed." That is what we were taught to believe. But instead, what we said at the door is: "Have you notice the world is filled with strife and seemingly insurmountable problems? Well, good news, God is aware of this and has a plan to fix everything that's wrong. To find out about it, we offer a free home bible study. It will answer all your questions."

That might explain why Romney's campaign strategy is a variation on this theme.

If a JW were somehow running for President, wouldn't he act out his inner conflicts in much the same way?

Can you think of any other examples of Romney's cognitive dissonance rising to the surface in public?

His inability to connect with people is clear and undeniable. It could be the Mormon in him, but I have though for awhile now that he has sociopathic tendencies.

The story about him leading a gang of boys at Cranbrook prep school in assaulting another boy with long hair and cutting it off, is very revealing. A ll the other boys involved in the assault against the gay student have expressed regret, often deep and profound, when interviewed as grown men. They are very sorry that they were involved. One even ran into the victim many years later, and apologized to him.

By contrast, Romney chuckled as he recalled the story. Apologized -if- he had hurt anybody. No empathy, no remorse.

    Sociopath?

Romney also claims that he doesn't remember. And that would be scary. The people who don't remember things like that are typically people to whom it made very little difference, people who lack empathy.

But is he a true sociopath, or is that the LDS in him? I recall many JWs who may have appeared borderline sociopathic, too.

I should point out that I am not taking political sides here, just wondering if Cog Dis plays a role in Mr. Romney's behavior the way it does in many JW's.

But is he a true sociopath, or is that the LDS in him?

The two pathologies can exist separately - lots of JWs and LDS are personable and caring people - but the two together could be dangerous: the lack of empathy and the justification for doing God's will gives one no moral compass. No wonder he comes off so stiff and robotic - he has to constantly check his impuses.

Romney also seems to have a temper problem kept just below the surface. Sometimes when he is expressing anger he actually chuckles, as if to ameliorate the impact.

Notice his latest gaffe - after discussing the tragic murders in Libya -

Everyone else in the room looks properly subdued. Romney looks like he just scored a win.

Here is a video of Romney laughing inappropriately in several instances:
