It's very difficult to figure it out. The classical mathematics we use is merely something humans have had to develop in order to try and understand the Universe, and it's had a lot of unexpected benefits when applied properly.
Those numbers are just symbols - they could have been anything. Besides, integer maths is just a really boring way of describing something which is usually far more intricate.
