Watchtower uses Christmas to get money

Looking through the 12/12 WT, I noticed this section on why people celebrate Christmas. One reason given is that they use it as a time to give to the needy. Notice their sly question that would prick up the ears of JWs to realize their need to give money to the Watchtower:

    ---------

“Every first day of the week let each of you at his own house set something aside in store as he may be prospering.”(1 Corinthians 16:2) The apostle Paul gave that advice to early Christians who wanted to help the poor. Could you ‘set aside,’ or budget, some money that you can regularly give to individuals or to an organization that uses its funds wisely? In this way, you ensure that you care for the needy while still giving within your means.

    --------

Reading through this I also asked myself "Is the Watchtower practicing what it preaches?" I don't EVER remember being encouraged to help the poor. Especially if they are not JWs. I remembered only hearing things like "We don't want to contribute to a world that is already going down."

This article also seems to take away from those that DO give at Christmas time. Notice this section of the article:

    -----------

A reason why some celebrate Christmas.

Because Jesus helped people who were poor, sick, and afflicted, some want to follow his example. They feel that the best time to do that may be Christmas, when charities often put forth extra effort to collect donations.

    Why is it a challenge?

During the holidays, many people are preoccupied with shopping, entertaining, and visiting friends and family. All of this leaves them with little time, energy, or money to attend to the poor and needy, other than perhaps making a donation.

    -----------------

Those that give during this time are shown to not be attending to the needs of the poor and needy other than making a donation. The church that I go to does a HUGE amount of volunteer work during the holidays. Every week there are food drives to help the poor. Next week we are collecting clothes to send to the needy around the US. There are gifts for veterans children programs. We volunteer to go to the homeless shelters to serve food.

If the Watchtower is going to sit there as a judge, I would like to see their record of helping the needy and the poor. The reason they can't? They have no record. It is evil Christendom that has set up hospitals and causes to help those in need. The Watchtower wants no part in that. Instead they condemn those that use various times of the year as a motivation to help others. If they were actively helping with the poor, the sick, and the needy, then I could understand them being an authority and when and how to give.

But no, instead they encourage those that read the article to give to an ORGANIZATION that uses their funds wisely. I ask them this: How can they POSSIBLY imply that they are using their money wisely? They are using their funds to pay off child molestors and their victims to stay away from court and tarnish their "good" name. They are using their funds to send GB members around the world to stay at 5 star resorts, drive new cars, and fully pay for their expenses. If only JWs knew what they were really contributing to when they put their money in the Worldwide Work box...

Wow...another part of the article that we ALL know is false:

A reason why some celebrate Christmas.

Every year, the pope and other religious leaders preach messages of peace, hopeful that the Christmas season will fulfill the angelic proclamation: “Upon earth peace among men of goodwill.” Some make special pilgrimages to celebrate.

    Why is it a challenge?

Peace during Christmastime is temporary at best. For example, in December 1914, while Europe was engulfed in World War I, British and German soldiers emerged from the trenches and celebrated Christmas together. They shared food, drink, and cigarettes. They even played soccer. (What a joke...The propaganda is almost too much to bear. They are associating Christmas with "cigarettes" and "soccer" both of which they condemn as unchristian.) However, the truce did not last long. In a letter from the front lines, a British soldier related that a German soldier told him: “Today we have peace. Tomorrow you fight for your country; I fight for mine.”

    What Bible principles can help?

“There has been a child born to us . . . His name will be called . . . Prince of Peace. To the abundance of the princely rule and to peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:6, 7) Is not that prophecy about Jesus Christ reassuring? Jesus was not born on earth to bring one day of peace each year. As a heavenly Ruler, he will bring genuine peace that will not end.

“By means of me [Jesus] you may have peace. In the world you are having tribulation, but take courage! I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33) Even today, Jesus nurtures peace among his followers. True, Christians have tribulation. Yet, thanks to the Bible, they understand why suffering exists and how Jesus will bring lasting peace. Therefore, they enjoy peace of mind.

By following Jesus’ words, Jehovah’s Witnesses?—regardless of their nationality, skin color, ethnicity, or language—?enjoy such peace. See for yourself by attending a meeting at their Kingdom Hall. Perhaps you, like many others, will agree that this peace is better than any peace that Christmas can offer.

Back in the days they "sold" publications for money, NWTs were the offer for November and December (high ticket items) and Jesus was featured in the presentation. I remember one sister suggesting them as gifts!!!!

    wha happened?

Good catch. The WT has never endorsed or encouraged any donation to a wordley organization. So that leaves.....them.

These guys just cry over and over for money. It's really sad

This is disingenuous - from the same issue under the heading "They Found Something Better"

"Helping the needy: “We enjoy making meals for people who are sick. Sometimes we bring them flowers, a cake, or a small gift to cheer them up. We enjoy this because we can visit these people at any time of the year.”?—EMILY, AUSTRALIA."

They fail to mention that the sick ones are only from their own congregation... They do not generally make a point of helping the sick in their community ,certainly not with an organized Charity Group

"Family togetherness: “When our family gets together, our children get to know their uncles, aunts, grandparents, and cousins in a relaxed atmosphere. Since we are not bound by fixed holidays, we do not feel pressured, and our family knows that we visit them because we love them.”?—WENDY, CAYMAN ISLANDS.

Do they cultivate family bonds with extended family who are not of the same religion? Not in my experience.

They are good at speaking with a "forked tongue" so as to give outsiders the impression of things that are not the case. If they were really representing Jesus, would he do that?

    Christ Alone:

A lot of religions and charities jump on the Christmas bandwagon in order to get contributions from people who might be in a mood to give. But, these religions and charities give something back to the community. In contrast, the JW religion does not help anybody else, no matter what season of the year. They have no soup kitchens or other things to help the needy that other religlions have.

    Blues Brother:

It is even worse than that.

The "sick and needy" in their congregations that get help are people on the approved list or clique. God help any sick JW if they are not in this category! They'll get help from worldly neighbors first before JWs in the hall help them!

And, no, JWs do not cultivate family bonds with extended family not in the JW religon. If anything, they want JWs to sever ties with blood relatives who are not JWs.

I can personally attest to this, because I was told I shouldn't bother with my family and relatives.

It would be interesting to write a similar series of articles based on the memorial using the "Why some celebrate the memorial" and "Why it is a challenge" outline. I'm not feeling clever enough to do it myself right now.
