For me nothing comes close to Muse's "The Second Law" - IMO Muse are up there with the greatest Rock bands of all time and this album is near perfect.

Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.a.a.d. City. Its not out yet, but leaked on Wednesday. Official release is Tuesday. I've heard the leaked product, and it gives me that same feeling of life like when I heard 36 Chambers or the Chronic for the first time.
Nas' Life Is Good. My favorite rapper of all time so I'm biased, but it made 2012 worth it. Its been a good year for Hip Hop.
CL, I always say I'm gonna give Muse's discography a listen and never get around to it. They're that good huh?

Theocratic sedition - I maybe biased because I was introduced to them before they were famous, but listen and make your own mind up.

Personally, I'll go with Bob Dylan's Tempest.
Speaking of music, I recently recorded a song that I wrote way back in the 70s. You can hear it at http://www.macjams.com/song/74898.
Nothing like a bit of self-promotion...

I agree with Muse being one of the all time greats, but confess to being very disappointed with this latest album, to me it sounded like they had run out of ideas and just cobbled together bits of thier earlier stuff. Maybe its one of those albums you need to keep listening too, but I never had that trouble with their earlier stuff.
Last "latest" album I bought that I really liked was Niel Youngs "Living with War".
I tend to buy older stuff as and if I discover it, most atmospheric I recently found was http://haleybonar.bandcamp.com/track/the-water

Cantleave I bought that Muse CD a week ago and havent played it, I also got the latest Lamb of God and have been listening to that a lot.
But my favorite CD this year is the Dirtyheads "Cabin by the Sea" is the albulm title. If you havent heard of them, they are similar to Sublime style of music.

I just picked up Mark Knopfler's ( former Dire Straits guitarist ) new double CD with 20 songs of new material on it. Freaking Wow ! This in my opinion may be Knopfler's finest solo album since Dire Straits broke up in I believe 1991 or 1992. It is loaded with really cool minor chord guitar licks, moody stuff, lots of blues songs, and great Scotch /Welsh/Irish influence as well. Been listening to it a lot the last few days. This album might just be my favorite in the last 12 months, virtually every song is very well done ! Peace out, mr. Flipper

I know this is off topic, because this is certainly not from the last twelve months. I came across this rendition of the Rolling Stones song "Dead Flowers" by the late great Townes Van Zandt. I wanted to share it, but instead of resurrecting an old music thread, I thought I'd share it on this one if that's ok.
BTW- I'm with flipper, I have been a Mark Knopfler fan since I've been about 15 years old and first learning to play guitar. I love his new album!
