This is for those who are familiar with eastern thought. Now no doubt we are familiar with the idea of no-self, or that the ego is not real and what have you. But there is the idea that in order to give up the ego, you have to develop one first. What do you think of this?

Interesting.
So would the terms "self" and "ego" be synonymous for this theory?
Or how would each be defined? -

just cuz itz on the topic of egolessness, k.They do not display themselves;
Therefore they are illuminated.
They do not define themselves;
Therefore they are distinguished.
They do not make claims;
Therefore they are credited.
They do not boast;
Therefore they advance.

I think its true. To lose the ego, first you have to transcend it, experience it from top to bottom, reaching the end of it. You can't trascend what you don't have or have only a small part of.
I'm not convinced though, that it is a good idea to try to give up the ego totally.
