Sungdong Shipbuilding - A South Korean Company. This is a PR film, but I think it illustrates what's happening in Asia.

Chongqing, once famous as the WW2 capital of the Republic of China, and HQ for General Joe Stillwell, at a time when the Japanese could often bomb the city, and more recently famous as the scene of the Heywood murder, allegedly perpetrated by the wife of the City Government's Chairman, Bo Xilai.

This was posted in mid-2012 and made it says by Chongqing TV, so I'm unsure whether it was part of a last-ditch PR campaign by Bo Xilai, or on behalf of the new administration.

Whatever the case, its a turn around from the ramshackle city that existed in the 1940's. It is now home to more than 30 million people, and the centre of large electonics industry that is connected to Europe by a direct rail line.

A laptop packed into a container today, could be on sale in a European city by the end of January.

This story is about a key feature in Asian development - I wonder how many people here have even heard about it?

Its a major development in the energy industry as it will make Russia a major player in East Asia. What is it? Its a 4200 km pipeline with a capacity to pump 80 million tonnes of oil a year to the Pacific coast. At a cost of 25 billion dollars, it is Russia's largest infrastructure development since the days of the Soviet Union.

Obviously, the Chinese and Japanese markets are the major targets, and the ability to supply oil to those two markets will increase Russian influence in both nations.

And, just as obviously this new pipeline decreases European influence on Russia. And we can understand that Putin will use this pipeline to make good on his pledge to make Russia a bridge between the new Asia and the tired old west.

You can read more in B.K.Badhrakumar's ( a former Indian diplomat) blog:

This news story in the Global Times details the largest water diversion project in the world, now under construction in China. The background is that the Yellow River in Northern China needs more water, the Yangzi River to the south has that water, so this project's purpose is to divert water from the Yangzi to the Yellow River (and some other smaller rivers). Ir runs some 5,599 kilometres and will serve a population of 438 million. The cost is $62 billion including the cost of neccessary rdams and reservoirs in the north.

China is often accused of seeking world domination, but the facts are that China spends its wealth on nation-building projects, not like another large and wealthy nation that spends the wealth of their people on futile attempts to dominate the world.

The project is not without social and engineering problems discussed above.

Regarding the ChongQing video above, I was introduced to a lawyer yesterday whose (Australian) son is a school teacher in ChongQing. The father told me that his son does not want to return to Australia, as 'Chongqing is the most beautiful place,' he has ever lived in.

Its interesting that this is the city where Bo Xilai, (whose wife was found guilty of murdering an English adventurer in China) was Governor, until his wife's misadventures. Bo previously had a reputation for transforming the city.

Turkey has announced plans to build the 'world's largest airport.'

    http://au.totaltravel.yahoo.com/travel-ideas/news-opinions/news/a/-/15950822/turkey-to-build-worlds-largest-airport/?src=y7homepage

Turkey is arguably an Asian nation, but the new airport will be located on Turkey's European edge.

    (Quote)

The project foresees the construction of a six-runway airport eventually capable of handling 150 million passengers per year, Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said.

That would far outpace Hartsfield-Jackson airport in the US city of Atlanta, which is currently the world's busiest with over 90 million passengers likely to have been served in 2012.

Plans are to have operating by 2016 facilities capable of handling some 100 million passengers per year at an expected cost of over 7 billion euros. ...

The project is part of plans to make Istanbul a global hub initiated by the Islamic-rooted government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It follows Turkey's flag carrier Turkish Airlines reaching capacity at Istanbul's Ataturk International airport, which handled 45 million passengers last year.

Istanbul's second airport, Sabiha Gokcen International, registered 15 million passengers in 2012.

Turkish authorities say their combined capacity still falls short of meeting increased demand, especially for a hub of traffic between Asia and Europe
