Now that we are using Ipads, and other mini devices at the meetings. Is there any letters from the society that restricts

the use of internet to only Elders?

I have a question, is it possible for an individual to have internet access without going through something provided by another agency.

We used to get in trouble for doodling in our magazines, you know, drawing sideburns on Jesus or platform shoes on the Diciples. Can you imagine all the kids who'll get smacked during the meetings for surfing the web instead of following along in their digital Watchtower? Pretty soon you won't have to raise your hand to comment, you'll just Cc. a text message to everyone in the audience.

Actually you can have a data plan with the cell phone co. that you have a contract with. My Iphone allows me to have this available on my trips and in different countries. But, I didn't want to purchase this on the Ipad. The Ipad is really not convienient to take with you everywhere.

The Ipad does work with WiFi ie. MacDonalds, Starbucks, Airports, transit etc.

If the publishers are paying for the Wifi service at the KH, why would it be exclusive to elders?

QB, I understand that you are saying it is technically possible to have wi-fi access apart from any system at the KH if one can afford it and want to pay for it.

I take it is technologically possible to have internet at the KH but be able to block certain people from access. Could they make only www.jw.org accessible at the KH only?

I think what you're asking, Blondie, is if you can have internet access apart from a wi-fi setup at a Kingdom Hall?

As mentioned yeah. Your smartphone does. You can use your phone as a wi-fi hotspot so you can connect an iPad to it. That link you posted earlier is just a crappy app that has a list of open wifi locations. Not incredibly useful these days.

Yes, if a Kingdom hall had an internet connection setup, the router could be programmed to only allow access to certain websites.

I am not aware of any policies from the branch in regards to internet access at kingdom halls. I know that assembly halls and convention facilities do.

A wifi router can be programmed with a key, like a password, to only allow access to those with the key. They can also be programmed to only pass data from devices in a lookup table that they recognize, so even if you knew the key it would ignore your device if you did not have its ID number in the database. This all depends on how well the KH IT person knows their stuff.

I guess it depends on your hall, on your elders and on whether you know someone who will give you the passwords if these aren't made visible for all to see.
