Jehovah's Witnesses and the term "Governing Body"

The term "Governing Body" is not in the Bible. They tend to squirm out of such reasoning with something like this, "the word 'Bible' is not in the Holy Scriptures but you still say it, right?" "The Holy Scriptures" (2 Tim. 3:15) is a reference to the 'Bible'. What information is in the "Holy Scriptures" that give us an explanation of the term 'Governing Body'?

"Holy Scriptures" is to "Bible" like "Governing Body" is to ??? The Apostles perhaps??

I do not see the correlation

Reminds me of the usual JW comment that the word "Trinity" isn't in the Bible.

Response: "Sure it is, right next to the word `organization.'"

They justify it by the footnote in the NWT for Hebrews 13:17.

In the main text, it reads "those taking the lead among you", but the footnote reads as an alternate rendering "the governors of you".

Thus if there is a "body" of men who are "governing", they would be named a "governing body".

Of course that justification opens up a dozen or so other cans of worms, but it is usually sufficient to shut up the typical brain-dead JW.

Their references from the Bible on this particular topic are quite weak, indeed.

when the scriptures mention to be submissive to the ones taking the lead, I always ask them, "taking the lead in what?"...

If you read the context, it mentions taking the lead in showing love, taking care of the sick etc...

not setting up man made laws

In the original Greek, Hebrews 13:17 can be translated as, "Be persuaded by those who go before you".http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Hbr&c=13&v=17&t=KJV#conc/17

Now, doesn't that loving wording harmonize better with Jesus' statement that "one is your Leader, the Christ?"

People only have to read Paul's version of events at Galatians 2:1-11, to see that he received direction from God to instruct all those in Jerusalem regarding the circumcision issue.

And his wording proves that they were not a Governing Body - he was dismissive of many who were there, so-called pillars!!

What "The Searcher" said. That and Acts 15:24 starts off as a sort of apology letter ... 'er, um, hey there folks, since some really bad guys came down to you and started teaching you things we didn't tell them to teach, here's what the real deal is . . .'

One person answered up at a meeting and sumgly said that "Trinity is not even mentioned in the bible so it is a false teaching"...

I caused a bit of stir when I answered up next to say the word "Theocracy" does not appear in the bible either but doesn't mean it is false...to people who believe in the Trinity the idea is in the bible...just like dubs say the idea of Theocracy is in the bible...
