    A child rape victim is sentenced to 100 lashes.

    I don't know about you, I'm an atheist, but I cannot accept that any religion can justify this inhumane, brutal, wicked treatment of a child victim of rape.

    There is no excuse for this behaviour on the part of a supposedly civilsed government. It has fuck all to do with religion, it has all to do with humanity and being a 'human being'.

    I have written to my MP and hope to follow this up through the UN charter on childrens' rights.

    Anyone here booked a 'Maldives Luxury Holiday'?

    You should read about the Aztec. Talk about justification...

    The lack of reaction to this story is interesting - and discouraging.

    The article said that the conviction has nothing to do with the rape... though that does not make the lashing itself any less brutal. With people speaking out against it, including amnesty international and their own government wanting to change the law... hopefully it won't happen.

    But yes, way to punish a youth victim.

    I didn't see this story, it is all wrong from the start for this poor girl! Not only is she raped, but now has to face a flogging. It doesn't look like the two are connected. I was pleased to see the mother is facing charges for not having reported the abuse.

    Hi Joe Grundy, thank you for posting this story. It truly is outrageous!

    Kudos to you for writing to your MP!

    The Watchtower makes them look like amateurs though. The WT actually sentence the young victim the death penalty(disfellowshipping) and protect the perpetrator(s).

    This seems to me nothing more or less than state-initiated child abuse.

    It has nothing to do with religion or anything else.

    As a human being, and as a father of a daughter who was the victim of a teenage rape, this offends me and I protest it.

    Civil Rights was a religious movement.

    Martin Luther King was a Baptist Minister.

    The Quakers and other religious groups

    ran the underground railroad during slavery

    in the USA and it was religious groups

    that brought about abolition and were primarily

    instrumental in ending social injustice of slavery:

    The Union army sang the song marching to battle;

    "The Battle Hymn of the Republic",

    words: Mine eyes have seen the glory of the

    Coming of the Lord;

    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes

    of wrath are stored;

    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrrible swift sword.

    His truth is marching on. Glory Glory hallelujah (chorus)

    I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,

    they have builded Him an alter in evening dews and damps;

    I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and

    flaring lamps. His truth is marching on.

    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across

    the sea, with a glory in His bosom

    that transfigures you and me: As He died to make

    men holy, let us die to make men free.

    And what have Atheists done for us ?

    Slavery is a perfect example of unscrupulous men

    using religion to abuse and enslave other people,

    and then being resisted, and swept away

    by more honest and brave religious people.

    I encourage everybody to write to the president

    of the Republic of the Maldives

    ( which is under Sharia Law, which is much like Watchtower Law)

    I just wrote a brief letter, stamped it, and walked it to the mailbox. I hope everyone else will do the same.
